Editorial Writer for Savannah Morning News

Savannah Morning News is looking for a part-time (20 hours a week) editorial writer.  In this job, employees would be responsible for producing persuasive, lively editorials consistent with the newspaper’s editorial philosophy, choosing and editing letters to the editor, and selecting and editing syndicated and guest columns while editorial page editor is on leave. Candidates also must contribute to the paper’s social media sites.

Applicants are required to have a college degree and are preferred to have 3-5 years experience working on a daily newspaper with 2 years experience in opinion writing. Applicants must also have proofreading and layout skills, be able to multi-task with minimal supervision, have thorough knowledge of libel and open meetings and open record laws, have high energy and a positive attitude, and be willing to use new technology for reaching new readers. Applicants should be able to handle criticism and be willing to push and prod the powerful as well as pat them on the back when it is deserved.

In this position, you’d be required to research and write editorials on local, state, national and international subjects, stay up to date on current events and maintain/build community contacts, as well as other listed duties and performing whatever other tasks are assigned.
