WRIT 315: Approaches to Historical Fiction and Historical Nonfiction

“From Simon Winchester’s “The Professor and the Madman”–his thriller-like exploration into the writing of the OED–to Erik Larson’s “The Devil in the White City,” students explore critical elements within the long forms of fiction and nonfiction. They master time and place as character, the symphonic quality of structure, and the notion that research must be fluid in order to follow the dictates of narrative. They also learn how to position their own writing within the publishing marketplace.”

Students read one of Professor Rabb’s books and get the inside scoop from the writer on what it’s like to work on long form prose. It’s not just, “What was the writer thinking when he wrote that sentence?” But, “What did he have for breakfast the day he wrote it?”

T/R 2:00 – 4:30 in Arnold Hall.
