Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing

Applications for the Wisconsin Institute’s Poetry and Fiction Fellowships for 2016-2017 will close on Feb. 29. Eligible students would be ones graduating from an MFA program in Writing by Aug. 15, 2016 and cannot be enrolled in any other degree granting program of study during their fellowship year. Applicants may not have already published more than one full-length book of fiction, poetry or creative nonfiction. This fellowship is offered $30,000 and will be allowed to teach two creative writing courses (one per semester) at UW-Madison starting in August 2016 as well as health benefits, a public reading, and participation in the annual Brittingham and Felix Pollak Prizes in Poetry and the Program in Creative Writing’s undergraduate writing contests.

If you’re interested, make sure to have the following things ready before submitting your application:

  1. A writing sample of up to 10 pages of poetry (single-spaced and uploaded as a PDF) or up to 30 pages of fiction (double-spaced and uploaded as a PDF).
  2. A resume or CV in PDF format along with the names, phone numbers and email addresses of two people who would recommend you.
  3. A $50 reading fee. You may pay online using a credit card through the Submittable secure pay portal.

All applications are due by Monday Feb. 29 no later than midnight.

Boldface Conference

Glass Mountain Magazine is organizing their 8th summer writing conference, the Boldface Conference for Emerging Writers. This conference is for undergraduates and pre-professional writers hosted at the University of Houston. It’s a low-cost conference and is funded mostly through donations. It is $195 per student at the early-bird price and it includes two meals a day. There is near campus housing for $235 per person Sunday-Saturday. The conference will take place May 23-27, 2016 and will include daily workshops, craft talks, readings, panels and the chance for private consultations with any of the 3 visiting writers, Tiphanie Yanique (fiction), Kimberley Meyer (nonfiction) and Lauren Berry (poetry). It will provide students the opportunity to work with accomplished writers and participate in a community of their peers (other writers) while supporting them in the pursuit of learning/mastering their craft.
