The editors of Chautauqua are seeking short stories, poems, and nonfiction pieces that address significant public and private experience through the lens of Americana. We’re looking for work that goes beyond personal nostalgia, patriotic celebration, or political argument and engages the essence of what the idea of America means, noting that multiple nations share the continents that bear the name of that ancient navigator, Amerigo Vespucci. This includes the heritage of explorers, settlers, indigenous peoples, and all those brought to America against their will.
We welcome work that touches on the reality and ideals of the Americas, including but not limited to such matters as landscape and the environment, history and contemporary life, traditions and heritage, symbols and pageantry, immigration and assimilation, race and equality, patriotism and dissent, progress and industry, democracy and politics, society and culture, language and music.
Chautauqua publishes writing that expresses the values of the Chautauqua Institution, broadly construed: a sense of inquiry into questions of personal, social, political, spiritual, and aesthetic importance—and when, where, and how those values and questions intersect.

Trainless Magazine seeks short stories and nonfiction articles. Please read through our magazine to familiarize yourself with what kind of work we publish. Nonfiction articles should stay relevant to our magazine’s theme of travel, athleticism, and culture. Fiction is much more open, as every world created through fiction presents a new “culture.” Stories ranging from 500-3,000 words are accepted. It would have to be an incredible, really unstoppable story to keep our readers reading after 3,000 words.
The Fugue editorial staff seeks submissions for our annual poetry and prose contests. Submissions will be accepted through May 1st. The winning poetry entry will be selected by guest judge Kevin Prufer, and the winning prose entry will be chosen by Dagoberto Gilb. The winner in each category will receive $1000 and publication in Fugue’s 25th anniversary issue to be released later this year. Entry fee is $15.
The Masters Review seeks debut fiction and narrative nonfiction for its anthology, which is produced to highlight writers of the next generation. The ten writers selected will be nationally distributed with their work exposed to top agents, editors, and authors across the country. Each of the ten writers selected will receive $500 and publication.This year’s judge is author Kevin Brockmeier.
