Santa Ana River Review

The Santa Ana River Review (formerly known as Crate) is the official literary journal for the University of California Riverside’s MFA program in Creative Writing for the Performing Arts. They are looking for fiction, poetry, non-fiction, dramatic work and visual art for their spring 2016 issue. The deadline to submit is March 15 for the Spring issue and for their poetry contest. There is a $100 minimum cash prize for the poetry contest. There is also a $7 early bird entry fee. All entries sent after March 1 will have a $12 entry fee. They do not accept simultaneous submissions or previously published work and all rights revert back to the author after publication, but they do request credit in future publications.

Broadsided Press

Broadsided Press is looking for literary artists to contribute an ekphrastic response to the lead-contaminated water in Flint, Michigan. When Flint changed its water source to the Flint River in 2014, thousands of children and adults in the city were poisoned by lead eroded from the old pipes by the new water. It has been considered a case of environmental racism given the fact that a disproportionate amount of ethnic minorities were forced to drink and bathe in the contaminated water.

Artists Ira Joel Haber, Stacy Isenbarger and Lisa Sette have created images that speak to the lead-contaminated drinking water in Flint and Broadsided Press is looking for responses to these works from writers. You can find the art to respond to on their website.

The Caterpillar Poetry Prize

The Caterpillar Poetry Prize is offered to a single, unpublished poem written by an adult for an audience that ranges from 7-11. This contest closes on March 31, so there is still plenty of time to work on your poem. The winner will receive €1,000 and will be published in The Caterpillar’s summer issue.  There is a €12 entry fee for this competition.
