701:Unit 2, Blog Entry 2: Time Management

Man!

I think I can definitely tell the difference between undergrad classes and grad level courses… or not. I don’t know if it is being at a different institution, the graduate level courses, or the online environment that is causing my time to fly. It took me a few weeks to get it together last quarter. I juggled so much last quarter that I cut out freelance this quarter. The school, the full time job, the children, the wife, and even the dog all have wants and needs that you are responsible to fulfill. So this post is reminder to my self and others on how to get make it out of art school alive.

  1. Diet : It is important that we eat properly. I am personally vegan but I’m not asking anyone to subscribe to that extreme. Simply maintain healthy balance meals, limit fat intake, drink plenty of water, make your last meal at least two hours before sleep.
  2. Rest: Go to sleep! This is really not the party environment. Try to get 7-9 hours of sleep per night, don’t drink caffeinated beverages within three hours of bedtime. I have been guilty in the past of painting until I pass out. Not cool.
  3. Plan: In the online environment, it is a must that you check on due dates. You will also need to recheck. The online classes are in a state of constant improvement causing the instructors to change projects on the fly. It may suck but it means they are adjusting to the ever changing design world.
  4. Exercise: I have been guilty of spending the majority of my day it front of the computer. This has been a vision killer. I also have had little to know exercise plan for the last two weeks. It is imperative that we stay in shape. I not saying become a body builder but three workouts a week would help us all out. If you finding trouble fitting it in try the following: walk to lunch, take the stair instead of the elevator, ride a bike to work, etc.

Relax. Art is fun!

Hang in there! SCAD has great resources on time management. But from what I hear, sleeping (a very difficult thing to attain, even for us faculty). But it is key. Once you get enough you can work your body/mind/soul in the early a.m., eat well and start your hardest/challenging projects first. Integrate fun and play throughout the day with intervals of 40-60 min work. Looks like you are figuring it out.
