701: Unit 1, Blog Entry 1: Graphic Design Definition

I think graphic design is the most effective form of visual communication. It allows one to use a combination of type and images to convey a message on multiple levels. I believe that a well structured design can serve a form of mind control. By using hierarchy, weight, proximity, color, tension, etcetera, the designer can push the viewers eye along a desired path. These same elements can be used to convey a wide range of emotions. I’m not really speaking of some in your face tear-jerking or cheesy cornball layout. The design I’m striving for is subtle, well-placed, and thoughtful. I want it to be virtually transparent to the layperson. All the research, planning, sketches, and failed attempts should fade away into the shadows to whisper well informed suggestions to the target audience. I want the end-user to genuinely believe that every eye movement and feeling is of his/her own free will. I hope that didn’t sound to evil.

I hope that I will be able fully grasp the true essence of good design and expand my skill set at SCAD.
