ABC & 123

This project was one of the most difficult assignments i had been given, we were supposed to find all the letters of the alphabet and the numbers 1-9 in nature. Many were easy to find but when it came to some numbers and letters such as number 5 or the letter Q it was much more difficult to find. After a few days i had found all my letters and had to get them ready for presentation. Instead of going with a poster i decided that a video would be best so i could do some cool effects with them.

Sound Map

For my sound map i decided to go for a more abstract illustration of what i heard in an hour. During the hour i sat down in my apartment i heard birds coming from out side, the air conditioner, people talking, cars and much more. I wanted to create the idea of my ears in the center and the sounds coming in and revolving around it. It was really interesting as i don’t think I’ve ever just set down for an extended period of time and just listen. There is a lot of silence except for the occasional sound of the world around me. Over all it was an interesting project taught me a bit about listening and interpreting things in a different way.

Jack and Jill Jack and Jill was a tough project were we had to figure out how to remake the story while keeping true to the original. I was in a group with three other people and after brainstorming for a while we decided on a story. Jack and Jill ( represented by the birds ) went up a hill to fly into the sky. Jack is hit by a plane and his feathers fall off , then Jill  comes tumbling down to save him. This whole assignment was a challenge and we were not sure how to execute it. We all decided to meet up a few days after class to work on the project, i made a few vectors on illustrator of the possible pieces for our meeting. After a few hours of figuring out the arrangement to tell the story we were ready to start. A few days later we all met up again and used India ink on Bristol board to create what is seen here, our interpretation of jack and Jill.

Map

For this map project we had to get a map, destroy it anyway we pleased, and afterwords we found out that we have to create something artistic with the remains. 20130306_152504Well i destroyed my map by cutting it, burning it, wet it in water, punching it, stabbed it with a pencil, crumbled it, burned it some more, and some more by the end there were only fragments of what was. I spent hours trying to figure out what to do with the pieces after we received the second assignment with it. After a while i taught about scanning it to see what it looked like and realized i could recreate a scene. The result was a drawn recreation of buildings similar to those in savannah. I imagined it to be like burnt wallpaper almost with the city in the background.

Blog Inspiration

After spending many hours researching blogs on animation, i came to realize that out of the many i only returned to a few. Many of the blogs were about the individual artist which is great, the work at times was fascinating but it wasn’t really eye catching for me. The blogs that i preferred to look at would usually have a variety of work and different ideas that would make me think of what i could do myself.

In many cases they had video to view such as in http://onanimation.com/ which  feature articles, reels, tutorials and much more but what i like the most were the videos. They have tons of videos and many of them show the behind the scenes animation of many popular movies, they also show trailers and just plain cool animations. I love to see what animators come up with and how ideas are endless plus its good to show me what is possible. For example, i really enjoyed the video on how the hulk in the avengers was created and all the work and detail they had to put into it.

http://www.animationblog.org/ is another blog i liked, unlike onanimation people are actually able to post comments and give feedback on the videos. In this blog the post are from around the world and their also broken down by the months they were posted. The person who post them can write about them sort of how I’m doing with my blog here and then the feed back from people makes it more interactive.

I think the best reason i like both blogs is because I’m able to see animation videos that i would otherwise not be able to find. The fact that their all in one place makes it much easier for me to view and discover. The works they show are pretty cool and gives me sometime to try to aspire to.

In this assignment we were asked to solve a series of problems with black squares. We are to communicate tension, congestion, increasing, bold, order, playful ideas with just squares. I tried to accomplish this with a few creative ideas that i quickly sketched and put into action, these are my results. I attempted to define all the given words as best as possible in a digital way only because i have experience with the programs and figured it would show a more detailed idea of what id like to do.

In this work i had to make a unified image using repeating shapes on a grid. The idea is to make something creative by using a single shape on a 10 x 10 grid. I chose my design because i wanted to go for something spacious, more symmetrical piece. i also like the slight pyramid look the triangles give leading to the focal point in the center. Precision was key as it is a piece with many small shapes, i had to be careful to not get out the lines which was a tedious process but countless hours later i had this design. I think the fact that i used an india ink pen to get a rich solid black shade also helped me with accuracy in my shapes.

In this assignment we were instructed to create a design using concentration and isolation. After brainstorming for a while i came up with a few designs i liked, i recreated them on Photoshop and Illustrator perfecting the lines little more.  The ultimately like my finished designs i felt they satisfied the ideas i wanted to express. This was a fun project that thought me a new technique and way of thinking when it comes to doing certain art work.

My final redesign was based on the angle lines. After seen everyone work and looking at my own, i liked the idea of a bold line somewhere in the piece and i realized how space between the shapes can create a lighting effect. I decided to make something with more of a 3d design on a 2d surface while also creating a sense of harmony by not over crowding my work. I believe i improved on my previous design by creating a less cluttered piece. I felt like my previous piece had to much going on with no emphasis anywhere. This time around i made more harmonious design with good negative space to counter balance the positive space.

When this assignment began all i could think is how many things could i create with lines. I quickly found out that the possibilities are endless. I began trying to consume as much space as possible but quickly learned that the negative space can have an equal or greater impact on the work than positive space. I liked the idea off symmetry and similar forms that work together to create a great piece. The black tape around it, i felt, framed the work and made it more pleasant to look at.

Class critiques

In class i was advised to keep it proportional.

To avoid continuous negative space.

To not have uneven or damaged ends.

If using tape fill to edge.
