since our final project is to come up with a brand and produce a lookbook for the spring/summer 13 season we had to come up with a concept for our lookbook. the concept we had decided on was having simple looks, with no patterns involved. the looks would consist of dresses, trousers, cardigans and some accessories such as hats and large jewelery. we wanted to get a feel that the little girl in the lookbook was playing dress up to look like mom. the colors for the lookbook will remain neutral with pops of color here and there. the pops of color will remain muted. along with our main line for our lookbook our diffusion line will consist of costume and play wear for the little girl who has a wild imagination and would like clothes to go along with it.

the branding for our final project ha become a bit more solid. we have decided upon a name for our children’s wear line: mini moi. mini moi is french for mini me. our reasoning behind the brand name is that every little girl dreams of looking just like their mom when they are between the ages of 1-7. we want our brand as well as our clothing line to be sophisticated. what little girl doesn’t like playing dress up?

branding is nothing short of an important part of our society. on a daily basis we come across logos, patterns, slogans, and so forth that we quickly recognize. there is branding everywhere from the auto business, fashion business and food businesses. companies are capable of surviving purely by branding. a well branded store or company is certainly not easily forgettable. just a few examples of well branded companies are Chanel, Louis Vuitton, BMW, Apple, and Christian Louboutin. of course examples do not stop at these companies. with Chanel you a have logo that has lasted through ever changing times, LV is recognized by their infamous pattern, BMW has their logo just like Apple and Christian Louboutin shoes have their signature red sole that are recognized by anyone and everyone. with a solid brand and a solid branding plan a company can be recognized all over the world, ultimately bringing in and keeping loyal customers.

André Leon Talley curated the new, Little Black Dress, exhibit at the SCAD Museum of Art. This exhibit conveys the one staple favorite that continues to remain true to the fashion industry as time moves on, the little black dress. “Little Black Dress” is composed of eighty alluring variations of the evening wear that was made popular by the late Coco Chanel. Within this exhibit there are some vintage pieces scattered about, some of which include: a 1957 lace cage Balenciaga, a 1907 Mariano Fortuny pleated silk Delphos dress and a silk and paper taffeta Pierre Cardin tiered dress from the 1960s. Aside from the select few vintage pieces the majority of the show consists of fashion at this moment in time. There are designs from recent SCAD graduates within the exhibit as well. You are able to see the evolution of the little black dress as you walk through the show, witnessing the differentiating in draping and silhouette from dress to dress. The rich red backdrop brings forth the glamor this dresses deserve to be shown in. This exhibit was absolutely beautiful to walk through and also learn from.

it is nothing new to the fashion industry to be inspired by history. in today’s world designers may mean to take fashion from the past and reinterpret it, other times it may just be instinctively done. picking out the small historic details of the designs walking down the runway each season is quite exciting. and example would be the Burberry Prorsum Spring 2013 collection.

whether or not the collection, or specifically the “cape” pieces covering the shoulders, were and interpretation of a historical piece of clothing one can easily pull resemblances from history. the garrick coat is iconic piece in the fashion world and was made to product the wearer from the outdoor elements. the “capes” in the Burberry collection have a small sense of this style.
