Today I put in an hour in the school gym. Surprisingly for an art school there were a good amount of people there, myself included. The facility reminds me of someone’s basement gym on steroids. Clean, dark and filled with boys with the occasional girl or two. I think it will become a staple during my tenure there. No one gawks and the only person who interacted with me was my current boyfriend who also goes to SCAD Atlanta.

I also took the liberty of talking to the assistant editor of student life and checking out the library to use the PCs, which SCAD also has in addition to MACs…yes I am a PC dammit! The entire time I wandered about the SCAD’s tiny campus not one person engaged with me. Maybe I have a Bitch face…or so I’m told haha.

The only complaint I have about the campus is that the HUB is literally at the send of everything and walking through the HUB is like walking through a High School Cafeteria everyone is looking at you wondering why you aren’t paying attention to them. There seems to be obvious cliques of people and you can tell the departments from one another,at least fashion and gaming or sequential arts stick out hard core. Either too much glitz and glamour, or too little color in a sea of black tees. I guess I lean more towards the black tee party.

On another note I lost my glasses in my house apparently and have yet to find them, so I am partially blind until I either locate them or buy new ones. Yay! Tomorrow is my actually first day of class and I am pretty excited to see how the professors and student body are when forced to interact with those who are not their kind.

Until the Morrow!

I attended orientation at SCAD today as a transfer student. They gave us tours and tons of info about “student life” and how to be a success. Most of the people were illustration or sequential arts majors. There were only two from the TV Producing department with myself included. Many students were around my age so my fear of being surrounded by 12 year olds was short lived…let’s just say I’m no spring chicken.

With that being said if you put some of the most socially awkward kids in a room and force them to talk the conversations can be quite interesting. I was just surprised by the number of kids who had double or even triple majors. How can they afford to foot such a bill? I could spot the really wealthy, the over privileged and the have nots in minutes. There were a few have nots, you can tell by the way they skipped lunch, hovered over the free muffins and rolled their eyes when the triple major transfer student from SCAD in savannah didn’t raise their hands when asked if they wanted a job after college…about 40% of the room raised their hands, the have nots.

Another thing….will I have to get used to people wearing frames without the actual lenses? I feel the same way about them as I do about pet owners who push their animals around in baby strollers. A part of me wants to punch you in the face and tell you to just be yourself…but then you told me that is who you are…so I guess I should accept that right?

No doubt more confusion will unfold as this journey goes along. On a lighter note SCAD seems pretty stellar from what they tell me. Only time will tell if the money and time I invest here will be worth it. At any rate I’m sure I will use every resource they have to offer until it is and they have lots.

Wish me luck!
