SCAD Presents:
RELAY FOR LIFE
Celebrate. Remember. Fight Back.

This is an amazing event associated with the American Cancer Society that SCAD has been involved with for 2 years! For nearly 100 years, the American Cancer Society (ACS) has worked relentlessly to save lives and create a world with less cancer and more birthdays. Together with millions of supporters worldwide, they are helping people stay well, helping people get well, finding cures, and fighting back against cancer!

What is Relay For Life?
Relay is the main volunteer-driven cancer fundraising event of the American Cancer Society. Originating in the United States, the Relay For Life event has spread world wide to over 21 countries. Relay events are held in local communities, campus universities, military bases, and in cyberspace to help fund raise money for ACS. Although the main objective of Relay is to raise money for cancer research and cancer patients, the event is held to also spread cancer awareness, celebrate the lives of survivors, remember those who lost their lives to cancer, and unite a community in the fight against cancer. At Relay For Life events, the funds you raise truly make a difference in the fight against cancer – just ask one of the nearly 14 million cancer survivors who will celebrate another birthday this year. Relay teams camp out at the event with their friends and family, taking turns of walking or running around a track or path to promote a healthy cancer free lifestyle!

SCAD’s Relay For Life is a Club!
Not only are you helping raise money for the American Cancer Society, but each team’s members are automatically accepted into our club; helping us build Club Relay’s status as well as being part in an amazing cause! Logistics of Club Relay Membership will be discussed after our event on April 12th, so until then fund raise away!

Now you know what Relay For Life is, now lets get to the point!
WE NEED YOUR HELP in order to make this event possible! With a fundraising goal of $10,000 we need anyone and everyone from SCAD to participate in our fight against cancer. SCAD’s Relay will be held on April 12, 2013 at the Dyson Field starting from 6:00 pm until 12:00 am. We have roughly ONE MONTH to reach our target goal, and with your help, we are hopeful that not only could we meet our goal of $10,000, we are confident that we could raise even MORE than that!

How YOU can help!
Every penny counts! SCAD students and faculty are invited to make teams of 5-15 people to fund raise as much money as you can until the day of our event on April 12th (each team must raise a minimum of $100). Once you have assembled your team, you must designate one person to be the Team Captain. This person will oversee all of the logistics of their team’s fundraising and will communicate directly with the Relay Committee. THIS WILL BE A HUGE EVENT!

HELPING US IT IS SO SIMPLE!
What you have to do-
-Make a Team of 5 – 15 people and create your own Relay Website and fundraising goal! Go to www.relayforlife.org/SCADga to start a team!
-Create a fun way to fund raise for Relay (Need help? Ask us! We have plenty of fundraising ideas! Maybe face painting at the park – Selling flowers / balloons / cookies / the list goes on!)
-Take 1 day out of every week to spend fundraising for Relay in the community
-Send letters and emails to your friends and family across the globe to spread the word of Relay For Life and have them donate via your website or by mail

Relay For Life Event: April 12th, 2013
Now that you understand what you have to do prior to our Relay event, lets talk about the actual day of the event! As stated above, we will begin promptly at 6:00 pm. All the teams that fund raised for Relay will have a designated “camp site” where you can set up a tent, table, whatever you want! At each team’s campsite, you will provide a fun activity for other Relayer’s to do! There will be live music the entire time, including a DJ and SCAD bands and musicians! There will be delicious food and beverages and just pure FUN! With your help, we will not only dedicate this event to the American Cancer Society, but we will make this event a huge fun-filled festival for the entire student body at SCAD to unite together and even network! Because it’s a team event, individual participants are not required to be there the entire time. But it’s so much fun, you’ll find it hard to leave! The event is a SCAD only, outsiders from the community will not be permitted into the event unless they have sponsored the Relay or donated to Relay.

Ceremonies at the Event
With as much fun and excitement going on at the event, we need to remember the entire point of Relay. The event is held to spread cancer awareness, celebrate the lives of survivors, remember those who lost their lives to cancer, and unite a community in the fight against cancer. We will be holding 3 ceremonies throughout the night, the Survivors Ceremony, the Luminaria Ceremony, and the Fight Back Ceremony.

The Survivor Ceremony is the first kick off ceremony of the event. Survivors are a large part of the Relay community, and it is an opportunity for participants to reach out and connect with survivors. The Survivor Lap, which often signifies the start of Relay, is used to distinguish who the survivors are and celebrate their victory. Survivors are invited to speak at the event to encourage those with cancer to continue fighting and to ensure the community that there is hope!

The Luminaria Ceremony is targeted towards remembering those who are struggling and/or have past from cancer. During this time, participants are asked to gather and remember those who have fallen victim to cancer. Luminaria bags are often decorated by participants, honoring a loved one who has passed or is fighting the disease. These bags are often placed around the track and candles inside the bags are lit before the start of the Luminaria Ceremony. Usually, the Luminaria’s are used to spell out words such as HOPE and CURE, and the words illuminate during the ceremony. Some participants or guest speakers are invited to share their stories, and each participant is given a glow stick in remembrance of a loved one. Following the Luminaria Ceremony, it is suggested that participants walk a lap around the track in silence to give respect to those who have fallen ill with cancer or to those whose lives were lost.

The Fight Back Ceremony will then be the last ceremony of the night. The Fight Back Ceremony is intended for participants to pledge and take action by spreading awareness of cancer and cancer research, treatments, and prevention. Participants are then encouraged to hold their own events in the community to help others quit smoking, push citizens to have routine screenings, educate about cancer in minorities, and to volunteer their time to the American Cancer Society.

Where does all the fund raised money go?
Money raised through Relay For Life goes to:
•	Research grants and research programs
•	Prevention programs
•	Community/patient support programs
•	Detection and treatment programs
•	Management
•	Fundraising
•	Construction of Hope Lodges

Now it is up to you!
Now that you know what Relay For Life is and SCAD’s involvement with Relay, we really hope that you will start your own team and be a part of this amazing cause! We cannot stress enough how important this event truly is and how even the slightest support and fundraising can help the American Cancer Society! We would love to welcome you into Club Relay if you choose to get involved, just think of all the people you will ultimately be helping!

The second step is to contact your friends and tell them to join your team!

Once you have your team together, step three is to start fundraising! Ask friends and family to donate to your team! It’s so easy to do this. Just send an email from your Relay Dashboard with our email templates and send your messages out to friends and family in seconds. And within minutes hopefully the donations start pouring in.
