Winter Break

Posted in Important Information on November 24th, 2008

Hello all, and I hope you’re all enjoying our vacation after Fall Semester! Here’s some info for you to mull over until January:

I am hoping to make most announcements here on the blog instead of through facebook. The SCAD mail server is less than user friendly with our mailing list, and facebook not only can deliver messages hours after they’ve been sent, but it goes out to all 100 some members of our facebook group, many of whom have never attended our meetings. I don’t know how many of you currently read the posts I put up here, but I do see we have a few subscribers. Those of you who do not have a wordpress blog can easily access one. Also, on MySCAD, on the right-hand column under the Student Workspace tab, there is a My Student Web Space link. On that page you can sign up for a student blog at blog.scad.edu. Even if you use it for nothing else but subscribing to the Q&A blog, I will at least know who is keeping up with the group.

Also, I would like everyone to leave at least one suggestion for what you’d like to see for Winter semester. Community service, group events, fundraisers, even discussion for the meetings. Anything is appreciated.

Have a wonderful break, see you in January!

Protest against Saxby Chambliss, Mit Romney

Posted in General Post on November 24th, 2008

I sent out a facebook message to the group, referring to a protest scheduled for last Friday, when Saxby Chambliss and Mit Romnet were speaking in downtown Savannah, campaigning for the upcoming run-off election for the Georgia Senate. Our faculty advisor Krista Harberson spoke at the event. Unfortunately I did not get any photos, but there were rainbow flags and cookies and lots of support. In her speech, Krista quoted this editorial by Keith Olbermann:

Nobody is asking you to embrace their expression of love. But don’t you, as human beings, have to embrace… that love? The world is barren enough.

It is stacked against love, and against hope, and against those very few and precious emotions that enable us to go forward. Your marriage only stands a 50-50 chance of lasting, no matter how much you feel and how hard you work.

And here are people overjoyed at the prospect of just that chance, and that work, just for the hope of having that feeling. With so much hate in the world, with so much meaningless division, and people pitted against people for no good reason, this is what your religion tells you to do? With your experience of life and this world and all its sadnesses, this is what your conscience tells you to do?

With your knowledge that life, with endless vigor, seems to tilt the playing field on which we all live, in favor of unhappiness and hate… this is what your heart tells you to do? You want to sanctify marriage? You want to honor your God and the universal love you believe he represents? Then Spread happiness—this tiny, symbolic, semantical grain of happiness—share it with all those who seek it. Quote me anything from your religious leader or book of choice telling you to stand against this. And then tell me how you can believe both that statement and another statement, another one which reads only “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

We will be collecting donations at this week’s meeting. Remember: $100 prize!!! We could really, really use that. And as our ICC liaison Chris mentioned, we have the second highest weekly attendance of all the SCAD student organizations. I know we can win this one, and it would really help out a lot of needy people in the community.

Also, November 4th is Election Day! Remember to vote! Keep an eye out for important for GBLTIQ… related issues on the ballots, and their results. Feel free to bring in a news article for group discussion.
