This past weekend the SCAD Museum of Art presented Little Black Dress curated by SCAD trustee and Vogue editor Andre Leon Talley. It will travel across the globe at the start of 2013. This exhibit features 80 garments from a plethora of both contemporary and historic fashion designers including Marc Jacobs, Miuccia Prada, and Renee Zellweger.

“Little Black Dress is designed to showcase the divergent and individual manifestations of the little black dress across this modern century and the last,” said Talley. “The exhibition highlights the strength of individualism, charting the evolution of the little black dress from its native definition of invariable propriety, to new and distinctly contemporary explorations of texture, tone, and silhouette.”
 (SCAD MOA)

I thought the exhibition was done very nicely while celebrating the little black dress in all ways. Being able to see beautiful dresses usually seen in photographs is a much different and rewarding experience. From Tom Ford’s dress worn by Lady Gaga to Prabal Gurung’s falls collection worn by Sarah Jessica Parker makes one appreciate the craft that goes into such classic pieces of art. I was also impressed by the overall layout and atmosphere of the exhibition. The SCAD MOA is such a striking venue to see such a collection. The red walls made the black dresses and white mannequins stand out.

The only thing I found interesting were the two blue dresses incorporated in the exhibition. They did not particularly blend in with the others or the overall theme. With that being said, it was such a wide variety of dresses really emphasizing the shifts in fashion over the past decades.

Yohji Yamamoto is an evolutionary inventor whose clothing has been referred to as an exploration of fashion itself. Several designers have taken his “anti-fashion” approach to the runway by creating pieces of clothing revolutionizing the body. Gareth Pugh has been known for accentuating the body through form and volume just like Yamamoto’s approach of a three dimensional silhouette.

One can say Savannah has it all, historic architecture, trendy coffee shops, a beach within miles, and a unique college atmosphere. With popular stores like Marc by Marc Jacobs and Urban Outfitters, we see a lot of girls with a very similar wardrobe. Savannah is home to a few boutiques students may not know about. I have been an employee at James Gunn for nearly two years, and if you are a student I would highly recommend it. We carry brands like Quiksilver, Karlie, Wildfox, Vince, Tibi, Elizabeth & James, JBrand & Joie. James Gunn has something for every style.

Our new shipment of Rebecca Minkoff bags are nothing less than amazing. Whether you want the M.A.C Daddy ($352) cross body big enough to fit your iPad, or Mini M.A.C ($198) (Morning After Clutch) for a night out on Congress Street is up to you.

Both options are perfect to stash your must-haves (lipgloss, cell phone, wallet, keys, sunglasses) with an adjustable chain strap which can be singled, doubled, or removed. Perfect for Day & Night.

Since my childhood, I have been lucky enough to have the opportunity to travel around the world. These experiences have given me a certain understanding for life that is simply irreplaceable. Yes, the rolling sand dunes of Dubai, and the vast mountains of the Chilean Andes are spectacular but it is something else that has shaped the person I am today. Culture is something that is fascinating and truly inspiring to me. From the colorful rainbows of landscapes, articulate modern and historic architecture, to the mannerisms of a country’s residents has broadened the way my mind processes thoughts. I tend to fall into a world with a vision of simplistic elegance that is defined differently in a variety of civilizations. Recently, I had the chance to travel to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. With the tallest, sleekest sky scrapers and luxurious shopping malls opening mile after mile I was most inspired by one of the world’s largest mosques, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. It surpasses any benchmark of luxury one can think of. The reflective, simplistic yet intricate exterior with over 82 domes, and 1,000 columns is not just a place for worshippers. I felt an instant connection with this building after hearing their concept of ‘uniting the world.’ They use materials and artisans from Germany, China, New Zealand, and India just to name a few. I must admit, the diversity shows with the most eloquent of tastes. This mosque includes 24 carat gold glided accents, seven imported chandeliers including millions of Swarovski crystals, and the world’s largest carpet made by 1300 carpet knitters from Asia, and wool originating from New Zealand.

The building is spacious, clean, and inspiring. The mosque becomes even more effective considering every man and women no matter what culture must cover in traditional Muslim clothing that for women is all black, and men white. It creates a clean palate to focus on the detailed architecture around an individual.

Personally, the basis of inspiration is not something that has already been put down the runway, or a specific street style fad. How the people of our world interact with each other can be peaceful or controversial just like fashion; which is constantly inspired by cultural events, poetry, and architecture which all starts at the root – Culture.
