Project Green consists of a dedicated, diverse group of students from different academic concentrations across the Savannah College of Art and Design, who strive to promote environmental sustainability within the college community. In addition, the group sponsors and participates in Savannah events, helping introduce its members to the city’s “green” community. The group works closely with the local chapter of the United States Green Building Council, and has sponsored events with GreenLifeSpace and Greenpeace’s Project Hot Seat.
In April 2007, Project Green organized the first “Step it up! Savannah” rally, and in November, it co-sponsored the second installment of that event.
Project Green’s participation in community events such as Earth Day at Forsyth Park and GreenFest 2007 has led to exhibitions of members’ creative work in city-funded art shows. Project Green also sponsors a lecture series that has brought in internationally recognized speakers such as Steve Badanes, principal of Jersey Devil Architects, and Pliny Fisk, visionary and planner.
In addition, the group has worked tirelessly with SCAD administrators to develop a pilot recycling program for Eichberg Hall, which is planned to carry over into each college building.
Project Green also will participate in the upcoming “Focus the Nation Teach-in,” which features all-day sessions on global warming presented by community leaders and professors, on Jan. 31. Group members will lead discussions about reuse and recycling.
Project Green meetings are held twice a month at the Student Center, 120 Montgomery St. in Savannah, and are open to all SCAD students, faculty and staff.
