High Performance School Buildings Workshop
Tuesday, April 22, 2008 for Architects, Engineers, School Facility Managers, Building & Construction Managers, Developers
If you want to make a real difference in the quality and affordability of public education today, designing and constructing high performance schools is the place to start. The Sustainable Buildings Industry Council and Sapelo Island Estuarine Research Reserve Coastal Training Program and the University of Georgia Marine Extension Service is conducting a practical, results-oriented workshop that will help you design and procure facilities that support better attendance and higher test scores, significantly reduce operating costs, and promote teacher retention and occupant health. We’ll show you how to build energy- and resource-efficient schools using proven methods and cost-effective, ‘whole building’ design strategies.
The workshop is for those who demand academic, economic, and environmental performance. The full-day session – for architects, engineers, and school facility planners – presents specific strategies and techniques for designing a high performance school building. All workshop participants will receive SBIC’s popular High Performance School Buildings Resource & Strategy Guide, 3rd Edition.

Volunteer Group Visits
A work-study opportunity
The goal is to help the local kids at this after-school club learn some useful skills with our guidance. If you know how to do something that has practical applications then we can help teach them these profitable crafts.
Project ideas may include but are certainly not limited to teaching things such as:
Painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, writing
Pottery, jewelry, knitting, weaving, book making
Music lessons, dance, filmmaking
Computer assembly, repairs
You are highly encouraged to suggest any other skills that you are interested in teaching.
If you can, get a small reliable group (no more than 12) together to help you run the workshops.
Each session will be from 4:00 – 6:00 pm every Friday.
Be at O-House at 3:30 pm to take the bus to the Club (510 E. Charlton St.).
The kids at the club are from 5 – 18 years old. You are allowed to request the age group that you want to work with.
To get started you need to provide:
*A written proposal
-A brief description of your workshop and how it will benefit the kids.
-The goals of the workshop (What will the kids have learned by the end?)
*Lesson plans
-Day by day plans of what will be accomplished in each session
[Tip: Try looking at some of your course description sheets to get an idea of how to write your proposal and lesson plans]
You will undergo a background check, so bring your drivers license.
This is a fantastic opportunity to help yourself and others!
You don’t need to provide everything right away, just please let us know if you are interested ASAP.
Thank you!
