The first step of this assignment was to take our maps and destroy them, basically. Do whatever we wanted to them. I decided to tear mine apart, tape it together, color it, mark it, tear it up again, re-tape it, glue pictures onto it, tear it up again, re-glue it, set it on on fire and put it out with juice, set it on fire again and stomped on it, and used it as a coaster in my living room.

The second half of the project was to take our maps and turn them into a final piece. I used pictures of historical monuments and pictures of things you would expect to see and do in those place and glued them on a map that I painted. Iwas really trying to avoid a collage and my idea worked out much better in my head but the finished product did not turn out how I wanted at all. I really enjoyed painting it though…..

The object of this assignment was to go out into the world and open our eyes and really observe our surroundings. We were to find all the letters in the alphabet and the numbers 1-9 in the natural world. As a photography major I thought I would really enjoy this because I got the opportunity to take photographs, however, it was really difficult finding some of the letters. The numbers were almost impossible!! Towards the end when it started getting to the last minute and I was getting desperate I started finding everything so easily. Weird how that happens….

This project introduced the nursery rhyme of Jack and Jill. We were to use this nursery rhyme, but turn it into something else; to create a new reason for why Jack and Jill would be going up a hill. To tell the story we had to use 6 8″x8″ drawings in black and white medium. How we mounted it was up to our group and we decided to use black illustration board.
The first step was to decide why Jack and Jill were going up the hill……
As a group we decided that Jack and Jill would be Agyrophobics, which is the fear of streets/crossing the streets. Overall I really enjoyed this project and really enjoyed working with my group. Everyone was very involved in each step of the process and contributed to creating the story line, as well as, telling that story with the composition. We collaborated for a while but it didn’t take too much time for us to figure out how we wanted the story to go. For the most part, we were all on the same page and really excited about each others ideas. This was essential to our project, I think, especially since we had come up with some elaborate drawings and neither I, nor Taylor have strong drawing abilities, so it was all on Michelle to create the drawings for each box. We all worked out the basic compositions together and a few detail things that we all wanted to be included, but since Michelle was the artist she had more creative freedom and I think she took our ideas and really developed them and added to them in a great way. Taylor and I finished the pieces with the inking using india ink and I think we were all very happy with the final piece.
I normally don’t like group projects, but for this project I did enjoy it. I think we just worked well together because we all helped to contribute in any way we could.
The critiques we received were as followed:
- The audience understood the story we intended
- Simple story but strong creativity
- Strong composition
- Did not like the street in the first two panels because at first they didn’t even see it
- Good craftsmanship, minus some ink being a little splotchy in places
- Good use of the shapes we were given.
- They liked the no crossing sign, that it was consistant in all the pictures
- They liked that the perspective change effectively and accurately from picture to picture
- Did not think the drawings were mounted completely even
- Would have liked to see more heavy black in the first picture to tie in with the boldness throughout the other drawings
- Good Balance of layout

Our blog post assignment this weekend was to research blogs in our field of study and basically summarize our findings on what we found, what we were expecting to find and what surprised us. My major is photography and I am particularly interested in fashion photography so I searched in fashion blogs, photography blogs and fashion photography blogs.

This first blog I found I was very interested in. It wasn’t about fashion photography but focused more on fashion and current trends which as a fashion photography it is important to keep up with trends and whats happening in the fashion world. There were of course lots of beautiful runway photographs and the writer of the blog has done work with top fashion designers so I think it was a very good find and I am very interested in following her postings.

This second blog was perfect and exactly the kind of photographs I want to be taking some day. One of my favorite things to do is look at photographs and fashion photographs in particular. The whole reason I began interest in fashion photography was fashion magazines. I would go through magazines and take out fashion ads and put them all over my wall. I still get really excited seeing new photographs and this blog had so many photoshoots to see. She also talked about her techniques which was something I was really looking for. Since I have never had money for equipment, I haven’t had the ability to play with lighting and different lenses so since I haven’t gotten into my major yet it was nice to be able to at least read about techniques used and see how they affect the photographs.

This last photography blog was a black and white photography blog which I one of my favorite styles of photography. I love black and white photography and this blog displayed such beautiful black and white photographs. I am somewhat picky about my black and white photography but I love the subjects used in this blog. Beautiful pictures and I really enjoy going through all the photographs.
I expected to find what I found. Photography being almost completely digital these days, I assumed there would be plenty of blogs to choose form in all different categories. I wasn’t expecting to be so excited about it though. Overall I really enjoyed my researched and it got me motivated to research more about whats going in the photography world.

So, for this assignment we were instructed to create a design using only flat black squares to express 6 words; congestion, increase, order, playful, bold, and tension. I had a tough time with this assignment. I didn’t want to be so obvious with my designs but I had artistic block and I could not get passed it. I also couldn’t, for the life of me, get my squares measured and executed equally. I think it was just an off day. However, I did finally finish them and they are as follows,

Playful
Tension
Bold
Order was my least favorite one. I feel like I could have done a lot more with it but I just couldn’t figure out what I wanted to do. I’m looking forward to leaving this project behind and starting the next one!

The object of this assignment was to create a motif using two shapes, cutting a piece out of one with the other and using that new shape as a motif for my design. Then we were to create a design, keeping the design principles in mind that were applied during our isolation and concentration exploration, to control the viewers eyes and move them around the piece.
India ink and cold press illustration board were the materials used for the final piece.
The first step was to find a motif. Here are a few of my options explored in class
After exploring different ideas I chose the last design I created (of course) and used this as my motif. 
After choosing my motif the next step was to pick a size and make a 10×10 grid and explore 5 different placement options for each of my tiles. I chose to do a 1×1 inch motif. Below are my 5 different grid placement options.
I thought most of my designs came out looking pretty much the same and it was really hard to visualize what they actually looked like without gluing them down. Because of this, I really went a different way with the last design, turning the motif in a different direction in each tile. This was the worst one, in my opinion, because it made my motif stand out very distinctly and I wanted to hide it in the design.
After finishing my 5 different designs I decided to go with the third design pictured.
Then came the inking plans……
This was my first inking piece which I thought left too much white space, but I did think it was visually appealing the way it was so I did not add to it and just moved on to the next inking plan.
This second inking plan I used to really see what I could do with each section. Most of them are different because I was exploring all the different options. This helped me get ideas for what was visually the most appealing.
Based off the second inking plan I took the things I liked and applied them to this inking plan then added and changed a few things and VOILA! My final inking plan was finished.
For my final project I tried very heard to ink everything very carefully, however, while I was “In the zone” I did accidently ink some spaces incorrectly and I had to change my design accordingly.
Final Design
My critiques were as followed…..
- Very creative design
- The class liked that the motif used created many different designs and shapes
- Has a motion like movement that makes the audience feel “sea sick”
- Very busy maybe too much going on
- Grid lines were not meant to be showing and some people thought it was a good ideas and worked well with the piece. Others thought it would have been better without the grid lines.
- Some suggested that the grid lines and heart lines be left out all together on the 3rd row and keep only the triangles to help give the viewers eyes “a place to rest” since the rest of the design was so busy.
- Overall good craftsmanship except a few places where some parts of the lines got a little thicker and was distracting to the viewer and was “all they could look at”
- Thought the border looked fine with my design

In today’s project we were instructed to create 2 designs in a square format to create isolation and concentration, to control the viewers focal point and lead their eyes through the piece. Below is my attempt. The first one is my isolation piece and the second one is my concetration piece. Enjoy!

After completing 25 thumbanil sketches for each of the 4 different types of design, these are the four completed pieces I chose to construct with the bristol paper…….
I chose my horiztonal/vertical final piece because, to me, it seemed to create sound. The diagonal piece I chose because it seemed to depict movement in two different directions. Like the lines were gracefully moving towards the ends of the page. For the curved lines I actually didn’t choose one…I started placing curved lines on the white paper and played with it until I found something I liked. I didn’t like any of the original curved line sketches I came up with but I chose the pattern I did because at first it looked like a flower blooming, as I added additional lines though the flower disappeared and the remaining lines almost look like bubbles. The last one that included all the line types was chosen because it reminded me of an abstract spider web.
During critique my pieces weren’t mentioned but as Mrs. Waldvogel said, my craftsmanship needed some work. After analyzing the four pieces I decided to redesign the one using at least one horizontal/vertical, one diagonal, and one curved line. I chose this one because I didn’t find any creative issues with my pieces, they weren’t the best and they weren’t the worst but this piece in particular was very poorly executed. The curved lines were very hard to cut out correctly and I was trying to finish it quickly. This time i went back and really took my time and paid close attention to detail and made sure to leave no stray marks. I also focused on making my lines more unified in size, so some weren’t too thin and others too thick. Below is the first design (left) and the re-design(right).

The goal of this assignment was to create 25 thumbnail sketches using only horizontal and vertical lines, 25 using only diagonal lines, 25 using only curved lines, and 25 using one of each. All together that makes 100 thumbnail sketches and here are mine.
I really enjoyed this assignment. I did run out of steam here and there but overall I think it really pushed my creativity and I had a lot of fun with it.

My name is Olympia Saxann Hinman and I go by my middle name, Saxann. Im 23 years old and this is my first quarter at SCAD. My major is photography and its what I’ve wanted to do since I was 14 years old. It started with fashion magazines and I fell in love with fashion photography. Since I have been traveling and rarely have someone to pose for me I have started getting more into scenic and landscape photography. My family travels a lot and I have been to many places such as Germany, China, Italy, Greece, Portugal, Egypt, Turkey, Thailand, France, and a few others. Traveling really inspires me, being immersed in so many different and unique cultures is such an amazing expierience and is a huge influence in my photography. I’m very excited to get my B.F.A in photography so I can improve in my art and hopefully take better pictures on my travels.
