The Empire Wedding Dress

Select the best one for your body shape!

the empire empire

This is a very forgiving wedding dress shape, great for many body types.  It tends to flatter the the Apple, the Pearand the Hour Glass. Classically it has a high waistline and the seam is just underneath the bust and the fabric below the waist falls gracefully to the floor. Slim brides with small busts tend to like this shape as well and pregnant brides find this the most comfortable shape to wear.

The Apple

The Apple Body Shape

This shape is full-figured from the hips up, though your legs can be on the thin side. A fitted bodice does wonders for this shape and styles that flatter included the Empire and theBall Gown with a sweetheart or strapless neckline. The fitted bodice plays up your ample bust and gives your waist definition.

The Mermaid or Trumpet wedding dress

Select the best one for your body shape!

Mermaid or Trumpet style wedding dresses hug the curves closely and are a great choice if you feel like to want to accentuate your curvy figure. This popular style is most flattering to hour glass and rectangle shapes. Women that are petite may find that it shortens their appearance and so may find this  unappealing. This is a beautiful shape for the fit, yet curvy girl.

The Hour Glass

Screen Shot 2013-03-09 at 8.55.26 PM The hour glass body shape has the shoulders and hips at almost the same width, as well as a well defined waist. Fitted gowns show off this curvy shape well. Flattering styles include theSheathA-LineBall Gown, Dropped Waistline, andMermaid. For a neckline, strapless works, as well as one-shoulder and scoop necklines.

Did you always have a passion for design and how did you break into the world of Wedding fashion?…

Since I  was a child, I have always interested in clothes, costumes theatre . Wedding fashion is similar to theatrical costumes, so it was a natural progression.

Tell us about how you relax, how would you spend your ideal night in and what would be your favourite night out? …..

I love to socialize with friends, go for dinner, go to the theatre, but my favorite night out would be a night in watching Coronation Street!

Do you have a signature style?…Yes, I think it is quite quirky and theatrical.

A-Line wedding dresses are wonderful choices for almost any bride. This flattering dress shape balances out top heavy shapes and helps hide some tummy bulge. Body shapes that look great in an A-Line wedding dress include the Inverted Triangle- because it balances out the top heavy shape, the Rectangle, the Pear and the Hour Glass. This style is also known as the Princess Wedding Dress style. A most forgiving style, it’s a great choice for most brides.

The Inverted Triangle

Inverted Triangle Body ShapeThis shape is a bit top heavy with broad shoulders, large bust and narrow hips.  To create the illusion of an hourglass, it helps to balance the lower body with the upper body. Best to wear flowing fabrics, low to medium-low necklines, a well-fitted bra and dresses that flow from the waist. This shape looks great in an A-line or Ball Gown type of wedding dress that has a strapless or sweetheart neckline.

Designer’s interview_Alice Temperley

Interview with ALICE TEMPERLEY of Temperley London Bridal

Alice Temperley launched her high fashion ladies wear label ‘Temperley’ in the year 2000 and two years later, she began to design bridal wear, with dresses created to suit the free spirited, sophisticated, confident woman, who was looking for something fresh and romantic…

“I started designing Bridal gowns in 2002, and we opened our first bridal boutique in 2006. We currently have three lines, Temperley London, Temperley London Bridal and ALICE by Temperley, launched in 2010…”

“I like to bring timeless elegance into our bridal collections – they are beautifully made with the finest fabrics, hand embroidered French laces and the most beautiful silks. I like them to feel comfortable and easy to wear, therefore making the bride look effortlessly exquisite and elegant.I prefer to work with organzas, silk chiffon, French laces & double satins.

I love using the finest chiffons and silks and stitching delicate detail on them to give a very delicate yet detailed finish. I definitely prefer something more textured or ornate with beautiful finishing than a plain stiff satin that is so often used in a traditional stereotypical gown…”portal-graphics-20_1159899a

So how does a designer at the top of her game approach the whole design process?

“I take my inspiration from life, travel, interiors, vintage finds, film. Everything and anything can inspire.  I have three studios, two in London and one in Somerset. The main one is at my head office in Notting Hill where we first stared Temperley ten years ago where I work with my design team. I also have a quieter place, a private studio at my warehouse in North London which is love to retreat to and where I keep my extensive archive of vintage, fabrics and embroideries. My third place is a small studio in the countryside where I paint and have a desk for drawing.”
