I also want to mention the additional MomeLove Special Occasion meeting we had on Wednesday with Professor Justin Cone. We got to skype with Greg Herman (http://morechi.com/) and it was amazing!!! Next time we have one I highly recommend everyone go! Its not too often that we get to talk to some of the biggest names out there while they’re sitting in the comforts of their own home with their dog!

Anyways here are a few things we covered other than Elvis:

(it was much more exciting coming from Greg ha)

First and foremost KNOW YOURSELF!

–As artist, striving to not only create but to pay the bills, you must always remember who you are and make yourself present in all your work. Coming from Greg this proves that you don’t have to lose yourself to make it big. Then again he has now stowed away in the mountains to focus on his own stuff including having a baby and a crazy horror movie “The Wadsworth Haunting” (check out the trailer on his page http://www.morechi.com/index2.html)

Second LEARN TO KILL YOUR BABY!

–This sounds strange and we’re not condoning manslaughter but everyone knows how it feels to put your heart and soul into a project and it becomes your baby. Then you take it to your teacher or your employer and they say “This isn’t really the feel we were going for” or “I think it would work better if you did this” and it sucks. But you have to learn to kill your baby. Drop it and move on. Mourning will only prevent you from getting to that bigger better idea.

Also SEARCH FOR INSPIRATION!

Professor Betancourt discussed this too. Go outside your comfort zone and look in unexpected places for inspiration. Andrew (el Presidente) asked “What do you do if you get stuck?” and Greg said “There are many things I do when I get stuck. First get away from the machine. Close your computer and get away. ” He said he’ll go for a run, clear his head. He recommended going to borders and just reading. He said being around books just makes him feel more creative because there’s all that knowledge at your fingertips-its gotta rub off! Right? He also said taking pictures helps him and makes him more involved in the all around process of a project. He also expressed his passion for light that he discovered through photography and how that has become a huge influence in everything he does.

Lastly I just want to mention Greg’s CREATIVE PROCESS, whether its a commercial piece or a personal project:

First he writes. I know this isn’t the first thing we go to as visually driven people but he said it really irons out the details and makes you get that much more descriptive. He referred to it as “treatment writing” Consider it a script.

Second he “mind nodes”. Its basically mind mapping software-just neatly organized which is always helpful. Check out the site its free! http://www.mindnode.com/

And finally make your boards and make them fast! He said typically he’ll create boards for 3-4 concepts within 3-5 days!! And he highly recommends taking your boards, throwing them out, and redoing them from scratch-he guarantees they’ll come out better the second, third, or fourth time around.

Anyways it was really amazing overall and I can’t wait for the next one. We’ll keep you posted on when that is going to happen and with whom.

So go work on your squirrel animation and get your GeekEnd ticket and we’ll see you November 3rd!

And I guess have a Happy Halloween too! ha

MOME <3 Meeting Tres! 10/06

Hey MOME <3ers!

Tonight was a great meetings!

To start us off Tanya went to the 16×9 meeting and learned some exciting news for MOME majors.

Motion graphic designers are now featured as available crew members on the 16×9 page!

So if you are interested in getting involved in some senior films or other student projects set up a profile for yourself here: http://blog.scad.edu/16×9/crew/ ! They also send out pdf newletters so signup for those too!

Then as the highlight of tonight’s meeting we had our first segment of Professor Spotlight!!

Dr. Michael Betancourt was the guinea pig and he set the bar high! Professor Betancourt comes from a background in photography and has experimented in both fine art and motion media. He’s a man of theory hence the Dr. He appreciates the glitches that occur within editing programs and focuses on recreating these mistakes, physcially writing on film, and even manipulating electromagnetic data from NASA to create purposeful and unique pieces. We watched a few of his projects, including an originally silent piece “Year” which aired in a Chicago film festival in which a local band Poison Arrows was asked to create a soundtrack. The band loved Professors Betancourt style and asked him to produce more music videos, one of which he showed us, for them using beautiful blending and saturated color bars. Then we had a little Q&A. Through your questions we discovered that his favorite piece he ever created was “Spook” a projection of a ghost like entity outside on actual historical slave quarters! He said it was most interesting to see the people react who thought it was real. Professor Betancourt also bestowed some wisdom about the ever changing nature of motion media and this industry.

He proclaimed that we as students are in a unique position to define motion media and should use the opportunity to explore all other forms of art in order to inspire and  help us fill out the definition.

Overall Professor Spotlightwas a huge success!

Then to round out the meeting we discussed an upcoming event GEEKEND 2009!

GeekEnd is a interactive conference being held at the Hyatt November 6th-8th. It is should be really cool and I quote, “Join us this November as the brightest geeks, designers, developers, techies and social media mavericks descend upon Savannah for a weekend filled with cutting edge speakers and panels, afterparties and networking.”  Definitely going to be a perfect occasion for MOME <3 members to attend!

We also discussed having smaller versions of the 12 hour contest and instead having 5 sec. contests. The contest itself wouldn’t last 5 seconds long (which some members interjected is longer than it takes for AfterEffects to open in the first place) but it would actually be an animation that is 5 seconds long. Haha

At the start of the contest we would annouce a theme (a color, emotion, or word) and then everybody can just run with it. Maybe next meeting we could all write down an idea for a theme and vote on the top 5 or 10?

Anyways the meeting went really well and we hope to see you all at the next one October 20th!!

MOME Love: 2nd. Meeting 9/22

Hi Everyone-

Tonight was the first full on group meeting and I can honestly say it was a great success!

We had about 30 some people there, including our faculty adviser Duff and even an AIGA (graphic design club) and 16×9 (film sound design etc club) representatives! We also had a few new freshmen faces and we welcome them!

Duff wanted to remind anyone that may not have settled on a major yet that the Majors Fair is this friday! So if you want to learn a little more about MOME go check it out.

Our lovely officers Jimmy and Ariel shared some of their projects from their internships this summer. Jimmy worked at Digital Kitchen (DK) in Chicago and Ariel worked at Big Smack TV in Philadelphia. You can check out some of Ariel’s work here: http://www.behance.net/arielhammer and Jimmy’s work here: http://www.vimeo.com/jimmyfisher

Upcoming Events we’d like to get in motion (media..ha) are maybe a social BBQ for other media related majors, Graphic Design, Film, Sound Design , etc. I think we are all enthusiastic about forming some collaborations with fellow SCAD students. Also having a 12 hour contest maybe towards the end of this quarter? Or maybe even going bowling? We want your feedback so at the next meeting (October 6th!) come and share your voice.

We also channeled the lovely Dominique Elliott and had a door prize! Congrats Kurt Paulsen who walked away with some delicious cookies an Inspire shirt and some other goodies )

Duff also shared with us the

2009 Savannah Film Festival bumper contest!

Its open call for entries to create a 20-30 second bumper to open for the films. This is great exposure! The theme is “a celebration of the art of cinema; the ideas of conversations, discourse and sharing with a youthful, vivacious, and colorful tone”!

You must register your name, major, year, phone number, and SCAD email address (teams are welcome but everyone’s email needed) to bumpercontest@scad.edu by September 25th at 5pm!!! They’ll send you more info after that.

Then final submissions must be uploaded to the internet by October 12th at 8am for consideration!

Winners will receive a Gold pass to the Film Festival, t-shirts, and tote bags. Runners up will also see their bumpers screened at the festival and receive all-access student pass!

Email Professor Michael Chaney for more information mchaney@scad.edu.

Good Luck!

Our Next Meeting is October 6th. Were going to try and get our new Professors, Justin Cone and Michael Betancourt to come introduce themselves, share some knowledge, and have an open forum for questions you may have!

Also if you guys have any cool motion media or any interesting websites, ie Motionographer, feel free to share them here or on the Facebook Fan Page!

Hope to see you all at the next meeting!

Spread the MOME Love <3 <3

The First Official Mome Love Meeting: The Officers

So yesterday night in an empty classroom in good ole Monty, a meeting of the rectangle table commenced. ha

What really happened is all the officers from MOME Love came together to discuss the intentions and hopes for the club this year. First we should begin just like every class of every new quarter does…I am Ali, I’m a junior Motion Media Major and I am secretary of the club. Our Presidents (yes plural) are Andrew Dicharry and Jimmy Fisher. We have a wonderful Graduate President, Laura Eagin but she is currently away doing an internship. Our Vice Prez is Tanya Yeremeyeva. Brit Kirmes is our trusted Treasurer. Alexa is our ICC Liaison Officer. Lauren Fundora has stepped up to the plate to help us with our Publicity. And Ariel Hammer and Brian Wooden are our additional Officers. Most of our Officers had very exciting internships this summer and their experiences should prove to be fruitful to the club.

Anyways we all came to the meeting last night full of ideas and very enthusiastic. Almost too enthusiastic because we couldn’t stop talking. Ha. But we came up with a lot of great ideas for this year! We are interested in getting some major companies to do guest lectures, Jimmy has already discussed this with Digital Kitchen (where he interned) and they are down. We also want to bring awareness to the students about our amazing professors, some of whom are new! So we’re going to have a “Professor Spotlight” segment for a portion of the meetings to get to know who our professors are and what they bring to this major. Of course we will share interesting videos, helpful websites, and any work that students may want feedback on. We are even considering offering tutorials here to for students to reference. Also we are going to talk to one of our new Professors, Justin Cone to see if he will do a Motionographer style breakdown of the motion media industry and what is going on day to day.

Our official first meeting is Tuesday 9.22 at 8pm in room 311 Montgomery Hall. Please come and become apart of this amazing club! Make friends, learn new tricks, and have a good time )

We’re here to spread the MOME Love <3
