Attached is my picture and poem that explain the sounds I heard. It was a very challenging hour. I probably wouldn’t have noticed all the sounds, had I not been told to try and turn off my other senses to focus on listening. I choose to sit right next to the Scad building on the bench. I thought I would enjoy this spot in the sun, but because it was right next to the road I absolutely did not like it. I never realized how annoying the sounds of cars constantly passing by coupled with the horns they never seem to stop blowing. The most annoying sound was the screeching of the cars when they braked for the redlight right. My picture tries to describe the things I enjoyed listening to as well as some of the crazy ones.

The alphabet assignment was very fun and interesting. At first I had no idea what I wanted to do or where to look to find the letters. Luckily my art history class assigned us to look at a gothic style monumnet in savannah and I choose the green-meldrim house. I started to realize that the gates surrounding the house had tons of letters hidden within them, thus began my extreme obsessive picture taking of random fences around Savannah. After about only 50 pictures I had every letter in the alphabet along with all 9 letters. Figuring out how to showcase them in class was the difficult part. I arranged them several different ways and actually made the project 3 different ways before submitting the one I did. It shows all the letters in black and white to accentuate the ancient gothic style architecture. I went ahead and bought wire so I could create a fence like poster with all the letters, and at the bottom I hung an address (which included 5 of the numbers) by wire to make it look like an address hanging from a gate. Overall I am very happy with the turnout of my project.

This project was challenging because we had to work in groups. I got put in a group with Beau who was already my friend and Enrique who was very pleasant and easy to get along with. We all collaborated and came up with the story about a soldier who goes off to war and his lover Jill who writes him letters. The first picture is describing Jack on the left and Jill on the right. The next picture has Jack going to war with Jill’s letter in his pocket. The next picture shows an oil rig which is what the war is over, the next picture shows an explosion and the question mark on his backpack means we don’t know if he is dead or alive, and in his pocket is Jill’s letter. The next picture is jack dead in a puddle of blood holding Jill’s letter, and the last picture shows the american flag at half mass and the letterhead no longer has color in it, the color has transferred to Jill’s heart which is now broken and dead. This is our take on the simple nursery rhyme Jack and Jill.

During our critique we got lots of positive feedback. Everyone though that the pictures being placed like they were on a hill was very clever and worked for us. They also thought our story was very in depth and well thought out. The only thing that was really questioned was the amount of red used and whether or not it was distributed equally on the left side and the right side. The class was split half and half. The last picture was also questioned. Many students in the class liked the last picture, however the teacher found the last picture somewhat blunt and too obvious. The heart was her least favorite part however when asked what else we could have done, nobody else had any suggestions so it was left up in the air whether or not we should have done what we did for the last picture. Overall I think we worked very well together as a team and came up with a great idea that led to a cool piece of artwork.

During the assignment we were suppose to find patters that could be obvious or not obvious. The beginning of my pattern world tells the story of my day. The first picture is a pattern of the fence because I was crossing through the fence to enter the SCAD building. The next picture is of desks, a pattern of empty desks, which is what I saw when I first entered class. The next picture is patterns on kids backpacks who had arrived for class. The next picture is a pattern of shadows of students who had arrived for class. The next picture shows the pattern of street signs, however these street signs give directions, which symbolizes the teacher giving us direction to find patterns in the world.

After receiving these directions I went outside and took pictures of the patterns of the grounds I was walking on, and the trees and fences I was passing on my journey. Then I noticed a very discrete pattern of the colors blue, yellow, and green constantly coupled together EVERY where around the building! So I took several pictures of places with these three colors and mainly just these three colors present to show the pattern of yellow, blue, and green in daily life.

Then I went inside to find patterns and to symbolize going inside I took pictures of the word SCAD which was a common pattern among cars in the parking lot. I showed that I was inside by taking pictures of light fixtures and air vents in the building. As I got closer to the classroom I took pictures to symbolize design class..which were actual designs students had created that showed patterns. Finally, as the assignment was coming to a close and we were sent home to work on this, I took pictures of students shirts that showed patterns to symbolize all the students doing the same thing.

This assignment was very interesting and fun, and I am really glad I had an opportunity to do it because I had never noticed all the patterns in the world, and while some of the patterns are very monotonous and boring I enjoyed finding the patterns that weren’t noticeable at first such as the colors yellow, blue, and green. It has made me more conscious about the world around me.

The Black Square Problem is a very unique task. This task basically leaves very little rules and has lots of room for open interpretation of the rules. I immediately viewed this project very differently from the rest of the people in my class by looking around and comparing most peoples thumbnail sketches with mine. My mind raced to think of many different ways to represent these words, and I had so many overwhelming ideas it was hard to get them all in order and decide on one approach. I did not want to do the classic approach most everyone was doing by just making the shapes convey the words strictly based on their arrangement, and I also did not want to have to make a separate design for each word. I wanted to make the words connect.

closer view

On the left side of the model you notice a straight line of equal boxes. The top box juts out in 3d form. It’s defying the other boxes by not being flat, however each side of the square is a flat black square so it did not go against the design rules. Its at the top to represent a leader or something BOLD by being daring in comparison to the other squares below it. The 3 sqares below it and one under the BOLD design, represent order. They are all of equal size, and are positioned the exact amount of space away from each other (which is basically no space) They are all the same. The next boxes are the same size, but the white space between them is INCREASEing. You wonder why they are increasing and it is because the PLAYFUL boxes (or the diagonal boxes connecting both designs) are pulling them away from their order, making it hard for the boxes to stay together, which you can see by the increasing amount of white space. I named these boxes playful because they are interacting with the other boxes, and in comparison to the ORDER boxes they look playful and fun. These PLAYFUL squares are grabbing onto the right side of the design which causes TENSION. For the word TENSION I did not use 4 extra boxes I simply played off the 4 boxes that were already existing, which are the two playful squares that are connecting/pulling down on the two other squares. The two other squares that are being pulled down are connected by two more squares making a total of 4 squares which represents my last word CONGESTION. These boxes look as though they have no pattern or rythem, and are just on top of eachother making them look congested and struggling. All of the words connected and played a role within each other.

Today we were asked to walk around the neighborhood for a couple of hours, and to experience the walk through the eyes of an artist. To notice things differently or to think about things differently than normal.

My experience was a very interesting one and it began like this.

As I walked outside the cold air I immediately got gusebumps. A public transportation bus passes me and I wonder how this form of transportation first became acceptable in society. I see Beau, and I want to follow him, so I do. I notice numbers everywhere. Bus #130, 30MPH. I follow Beau to a diner, a cute, old fashioned diner that I have passed probably 100 times but never appreciated. There are 100 songs in the jukebox. They each cost 25cents to play. I think back to the days when people had to pay to hear music, and suddenly have a new appreciation for my iphone. Beau sits at the counter while I sit in the booth. We stare at each other longer than most people. I would have never noticed that stare, but I was paying attention. Its cold inside the diner, and I feel a weird sense of abandonment.

I stumble upon a great piece of art perched on a fence, perfectly placed just outside the diner. This is when I realize the world is so full of art if only people took time to notice and appreciate it. This is my favorite picture and finding. I love him. My perfectly placed goblin in a world full of normal.

I continue on. Finding a buddy along the way.

I journey off alone just like the cat. A man on the side of the road is raking leaves. Somehow the world goes quiet and all you can hear is him, the rake, and the silence. IMG_3417

Its like the world stops when nobody’s looking and you can appreciate another persons precious seconds of life. It was like for the first time, I appreciated someone elses gift of life, even if it does only involve raking leaves. It looked peaceful.

When I kept walking, the town seemed run down, but through the rundown window of an old furniture store lied a sign that said “Like It?Let us Finance IT.” Through the window you see SCAD and a ghostly image of me. SCAD is financing my future, and the photo knew what it was saying before I did.

Right next to the furniture store was a chain link fence. I decide to let the image of a chainlink fence represent holding me in place from moving on further. So i video’d what I saw at that time. and interestingly enough, I caught someone else stuck in time, just like me.

IMG_3421

I wanted to know what the people in their cars were thinking about. But I kept walking.

I saw a leaf….But it wasnt just any ordinary leaf, it was just sitting there, waiting….waiting to be smashed.

Once I smashed it I felt better and kept walking.

I stumbled upon a tree, with many different layers of branches. It was trippy. So i filmed it. IMG_3439

Trees are the most committed organism on the planet. Once they plant their seed they stay put and devote every ounce of energy to making their choice survive. Too bad humans aren’t like that.

As I continued walking my curiosity got the best of me and I ventured down and alley that would definitely not be acceptable to go down at night. I decided I could probably take whatever crack head lurked in the corner, during the day anyway. In the middle of desolate building and garbage was a beautiful mural. It looks like a face with a clouded mind, much like the people that have been jaded by life that live in the area.

One persons trash is another ones treasure, and in my case, someones actual trashcan was artistic.

Right next to the trashcan was a fireplace. A literal fireplace in the middle of the alley. It is so intriguing to think about the people that used to sit by this fireplace at night, and strange to see how the world and neighborhood has evolved so much so that the actual fireplace is the only thing that is left of someones life. Atleast the people’s spirits are still burning bright in another realm.

As I was leaving the alley I pass a building that is boarded up. Whenever someone seems a building boarded up, they know not to go in, and usually continue on. I was far to curious to see what lied behind the boards. Naturally to me, probably unnaturally to most people, I see if I can see over the boards because I am so tall.

I was just barely too short, but my arm extended over when I jumped up just enough to take a picture of the darkness behind the boards. I never knew I was going to get one of my favorite pictures on my journey. And I highly doubt anyone else was able to see what I found……

After I snapped this picture I walked around the side of the building and found this doornob. I liked the antique aspect of it, the rusting of the wood was suddenly beautiful.

I started at this house for a while and couldnt figure out what I liked about it but something drew me too it. When I took a picture of it and turned it upside down I realized it was the contrast between the stone, the white wood, and the green. It looks like the entrance way to a castle, and the white bars are lifted up to let someone enter.

This flower, which I have never seen before was right outside the castle (house). The way it jiggled in the wind signaled it was alive and ready to destruct whatever insect mistook it to be pretty and not poisonous.

I was waiting to cross the street, and was taking a picture of the sign trying to understand why they need an explanation for the universal symbols for walk and dont walk. But the true art form in this picture is the man on the bicycle behind the picture. I caught him unknowingly ready to cross. He made me feel lonely, yet strong. He still has hope for his life.

The entire journey I wondered whether or not I truley was the master of my path? Or had the path I had “choosen” already been set out for me and I was unkowningly taking it, step by step. Like the peice of a puzzle in the greater picture of life.

I can only hope that On my journey I dont end up like this guy.

REST IN PEACE SQUIRREL. October 8, 2012.

Heading back to the building at the end of my journey I passed an alleyway. I kept walking, then realized something was drawing me too it, and I finally couldn’t resist, so I turned around, walked down the alley, and found this.

To anyone else it might just seem like a SHED with a LOCK, but for me to find this at the end of my journey was a sign. It symbolizes that what one person sees is not always what another sees, and unless I describe the journey I had to the world through my eyes, the journey will forever be locked in a shed. I hope I was able to UNLOCK my journey and SHED some light on how I view the world. Thanks for going with me.

This assignment was by far one of the biggest challenges for me. I had a great design that I spent several hours working on, however it was such a complex design that it was very easy to get overwhelmed when not utilized correctly. I worked with several different grids and made up almost 6 different designs before settling on the one I presented in class.

I started out by making the grids with the little and big squares we had cut out. Once I came up with the concept that I wanted I began to utilize it on the grid. However, the concept that I had originally planned out was very different from my ending piece I had made some severe changes as far as which parts were going to be colored in dark and how I was going to turn the pieces to make it aesthetically appealing.

Once I had my design I knew that I wanted to present a different border than everyone else so help convey the concept of my design and to better tell the story of what it was suppose to represent. When I hung my design on the wall the class critiqued it and said very nice things. They liked the design that I drew, and how I utilized the grid. They were unable to see how I got the design to hide the grid lines so well. they also like the idea that my border represented the idea of wings.

I had to explain my piece so people could better understand it in class. My design is representing good and evil. The birds are evil and spawn from the back abyss shown below them. They are trying to spread the darkness further and capture the good birds in the dark abyss. The square border made the design too sweet so I Sharped the edges and made the design have lots of tension to show the anger in the birds who are trying to escape the white light. They are attempting to get out but are surrounded by the good. I wanted the piece to look angry and overall I think it did. I am happy with my design and I spent a very long time working on it and thinking about exactly what I wanted it to represent.

This activity was easy at first, then become quite challenging when cutting out each individual line. It was very difficult to choose a design based on the white space that would be left. I was unsure of many of my designs and continuously had to stop myself from wanting to make shapes and pictures that had meaning, however when I finally got the knack of it, everything became a little easier. I like that this challenged our minds to think creatively and in an abstract way. When you stared at each picture long enough you began to see things that you did not originally pick up on, much like clouds in the sky. The final product of the ones I choose to construct with black construction paper and all 100 thumbnail sketches are posted below .

Today in class we all participated in critiques of each others artwork. I was lucky enough to have two of mine critiqued, and ironically one was very positive and the other negative. The 1st picture right below this paragraph received a negative critique. The horizontal, straight, and curved lines did not come together which made the piece looked distorted and lackednergy. It also did not divide up the negative space is a positive way because there is too much fluidity in the negative space. Looking back, I completely understand why this peice failed so it was a great learning experience.

My next peice that was critiqued was my horizontal line peice (which on this posting is not positioned correctly) but is 3 pictures below this paragraph. I was really happy to see that my teacher Mrs.Waldvogal was the one that pointed out my peices. She started off by telling the class that this peice was really interesting to her, as well as the piece (4 pictures down) that was using straight lines. The class jumped on the bandwagon and agreed that they found my horizontal piece interesting. Seeing as how this is my first Design or art class that ive ever done, you could imagine my surprise and excitement. The class said that this piece had power, emotion, rhythm, and did a good job of diving up the negative space without taking over, and without it seeming like a shape. However, my craftsmanship did need to be better as far as the size, paper, and glue used.

I think everyone else did a really great job on their pieces too, there was some unbelievable craftsmanship and inventiveness. I was very surprised at the talent in the classes, everyone had some sort of creative side and it was amazing to see the outcome. I enjoyed the project and am looking forward to the next!

Heyyyyy. Im Olivia. My story is different from most….this is my first year at SCAD, however I am 22 years old. I graduated high school in 08′ and went to Georgia Southern University. I honestly had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and figured I would take the route my parents mapped out for me and began working towards a Business Marketing degree at Southern. I went to that school for 3 miserable years searching for a future that was the opposite of the path I was currently on. The time I spent there (which was far far too long -_-) may seem like a complete waste to most people, but it was those hard days of soul searching and dreaming that led me to where I am. Finding yourself is never an easy process and for some it takes longer than others (me obviously being that case), however when I realized that my creative side was dying I knew I needed to do something to light that fire again even if it meant leaving behind/loosing money, time, friends, parents wishes, and an internship. I have always loved acting..I was in theater at Georgia Southern, trained at The Company Acting Studio in Atlanta,Ga, and have been singed with Click Models in Atlanta and Elite in New York since I was 15 years old….but I never realized how strong my passion was for it until I allowed it to be acceptable to myself even if it wasn’t acceptable to my parents. Shortly after coming to this realization I applied to SCAD to hopefully study in their Film and Television program, and got accepted. Due to the fact that marketing doesn’t exactly have much to do with most of the classes students take at SCAD, I only had 45 credits transfer out of 97. It sucks, but my philosophy is that it is NEVER too late to follow your dream, so here I am as focused as I’ll ever be with a drive that could kill. I encourage every else to always follow their dreams, although I think most of the people at SCAD already are .

Random Facts: I have a almost 2 yr old black cat that was born on Halloween ( I think supposid “unlucky” things are lucky) and his name is Skylar.

My favorite food is Sushi (tuna, salmon, and eel)

Favorite Book: The Secret; Favorite Movie: WAYYY to many to list because I am a movie buff, however my favorite genres are Horror & Comedy.

BYEEE!
