Black Square Problem
The Black Square Problem is a very unique task. This task basically leaves very little rules and has lots of room for open interpretation of the rules. I immediately viewed this project very differently from the rest of the people in my class by looking around and comparing most peoples thumbnail sketches with mine. My mind raced to think of many different ways to represent these words, and I had so many overwhelming ideas it was hard to get them all in order and decide on one approach. I did not want to do the classic approach most everyone was doing by just making the shapes convey the words strictly based on their arrangement, and I also did not want to have to make a separate design for each word. I wanted to make the words connect.
On the left side of the model you notice a straight line of equal boxes. The top box juts out in 3d form. It’s defying the other boxes by not being flat, however each side of the square is a flat black square so it did not go against the design rules. Its at the top to represent a leader or something BOLD by being daring in comparison to the other squares below it. The 3 sqares below it and one under the BOLD design, represent order. They are all of equal size, and are positioned the exact amount of space away from each other (which is basically no space) They are all the same. The next boxes are the same size, but the white space between them is INCREASEing. You wonder why they are increasing and it is because the PLAYFUL boxes (or the diagonal boxes connecting both designs) are pulling them away from their order, making it hard for the boxes to stay together, which you can see by the increasing amount of white space. I named these boxes playful because they are interacting with the other boxes, and in comparison to the ORDER boxes they look playful and fun. These PLAYFUL squares are grabbing onto the right side of the design which causes TENSION. For the word TENSION I did not use 4 extra boxes I simply played off the 4 boxes that were already existing, which are the two playful squares that are connecting/pulling down on the two other squares. The two other squares that are being pulled down are connected by two more squares making a total of 4 squares which represents my last word CONGESTION. These boxes look as though they have no pattern or rythem, and are just on top of eachother making them look congested and struggling. All of the words connected and played a role within each other.
