End of the quarter…

Hello readers…

It is finally the end of the quarter. After being working really hard, we all made it. It feels so good to close a small chapter of our lives and continue with the next one. I hope everyone gets even more excited about the next quarter, if not, try to find that excitement again before you do not find it ever again.

I enjoyed this class, learned a lot of things that would help me as an art student, met new students and got to know their way of thinking through all of the different assignments, and I had an amazing time working on all of the different projects.

Thanks for visiting my blog!

Arrivederci amici!

Map assignment!

Hello there…

For this assignment we had to find a commercial map and do whatever we wanted with it. WHATEVER. I used a Savannah map and cut the edges like fringe and write random letter and number on it. I cut out some blocks and stick them randomly around the map. I also had some glue with a little bit of glitter and charcoal.

My plan A was to create a 3-D face. I wanted to make a woman crying with the flag of my country on her mouth with the words “Welcome to Venezuela…” representing the lack of freedom of expression in my country. For the background (behind the woman’s face), I wanted to paint, with acrylic, a puddle of blood representing the insecurity. The hair of the woman would have been the fringe of the map and the rest of the face the whole map. However, I did not find a way to create a 3-D face and I give up quickly. I regret not trying harder to find a way of doing the 3-D face because the day before the critique, the president of my country, Hugo Chavez Frias, died. It is not that I feel happy, but I feel relieved that he would not be in charge of Venezuela anymore. So, however, It would have been the perfect timing.

My plan B was a purse. I am an undecided major so I am trying to find out what I really would love to do for the rest of my life. I try to do different things in every assignment, use different media, materials, topic, and others so I can go through a lot of different majors and figure out them. Nonetheless, accessory design seems very interesting to me and so, I did a purse.

I did a rough sketch of how would the purse look like:

Sketch 2 Sketch 1

I did the purse with cardboard, black acrylic paint, gold painted paper, A LOT OF SUPER GLUE, and the map.

Here is a picture of me while working on the purse:

Working

Unfortunately, I forgot to take a picture of the final design.

What was funny about this assignment is that I fell of my bike on my way to go to class and I was holding my project while riding my bike. I was holding my project with my right hand, and under my right arm I had a cup filled up with juice. I was riding my bike on the sidewalk with my left hand. I have done it before, so I was doing good so far. However, I never use belts, and I needed to pull up my pants, so I decided to use my left hand (the one I was using to ride my bike) to pull up my pants. It is worth noting, that I was in motion during all this. It was time for me to take a right and get off the sidewalk but I was still pulling my pants up, so when I grab the handlebar, I did a really tight turn and my front wheel got stuck in a crack and there it was. I fell. I saw that my middle finger was bleeding and then I turn around and see that my project was on the floor all cover on juice and some parts around it. Honestly, I wanted to cry but I was so embarrassed and I did not want the people to see me crying but when I saw my project I got so mad that I had to cry. I nice woman gave me a ride to Anderson. SO, I got late to class,  soaking wet in juice and with my project a little bit messed up with some blood on it.

After all I learned while doing my assignment, I also learned that I am not wonder woman.

I hope you enjoyed this post!

ABC… / 123…

GREETINGS!

This assignment was try to find the ABC and the number from 1 through 9 on the things that surround our daily life and that we take for granted. I definitely enjoyed this assignment a lot, even though I had to make a plan B for my final design and I did not get some sleep before the critique because my plan A was so messy and it was a disaster. However, a lot of people really liked my plan B, so I am extremely glad that my plan A was terrible.

I decided that instead of looking for the letter and number in my apartment, that I wanted to spot them somewhere else. I took my bike on the weekend and I chased all the letters. Here are all of my photographs:

A – the sky… I love this one because it does not matter how many time you flip it you will find a new A. (MLK)

Jack and Jill…

Hello everyone!

This was a really fun assignment because of what we had to do and being able to work in groups and get to know our classmates a little bit more and actually the story is really cute.

However, for this assignment my team, Juliana Vargas, Mariana Flores and Taylor Sergeant, did the following:

First, we all did our own representation of the story and we Decided that Mariana’s idea would be the best. Marian changed the story a little bit. This is how Mariana changed it:

At the circus, Jack and Jill

Went up the stairs

To fetch a pail of water.

Jack saw Mouse and he got scared

Then fell down and broke his leg.

Jill came down to laugh at him.

We decided that Jack will be an elephant and jill a mouse. I did the drawings and Taylor helped me too. After, Juliana, Mariana and Taylor traced them and transcribe them onto the 8×8 inch bristol board sheets. Then, Juliana, Mariana and Taylor traced them with micro pens. When they were all traced Juliana, Mariana and I add some color to them. After all of the drawings were done, Juliana, Taylor and me placed them in two different black boards. Finally, Taylor did the cover for the two boards.

Jack and Jill final

We also had to choose some of these pictograms for our designs. The background of the first design is the little square with curved lines (we chose that one because it looks like a circus tent), on the second design we did not add any of the pictograms, on the third design we use the water pipe -I really do not know the name of that-, and in the forth design we used the line of little triangles as circus flags. In the fifth design we used a lot of them: the symbols, the jagged circle, the ladder, the elephant falling, and the crutches, and in the last design we used the ladder and the small teddy bear that is going down the ladder.

Pictograms

I was absent for the critique but I asked Juliana and Marian what did they said about our work. Juliana and Mariana told me that they would have like that if we would have used the flags in all of the designs. Our classmates mention how good was the craftsmanship, and that they liked how we divided the whole story in two different boards.

I personally thought we did a nice job but I feel like we should have done more drawing to it. Overall, we all enjoyed doing it at least.

Sound map!

Hello!

I actually find this assignment complicated. How would we represent graphically the sounds? It is a really complex question. However, this is my representation of the following sounds:

1. Water dripping: I did some vertically thin lines that at the end are a little bit curved (that is when the drop hits the ground).

2. Footsteps: I thought of making different size of ovals because while someone is walking the noise is never the same, specially when they have been very noisy and then the have to walk silently.

3. People talking and laughing: I drew some horizontal lines in representation of an indistinct talking. Where the lines are higher is when they were laughing.

4. Door closing: I depicted a vertical jagged line representing the noise of a very noise door while it is being closed. The lines fades away to represent the door closing.

5. Coins falling: This one actually look like stars because I think that when the coins hit the ground they make a really sharp noise and I wanted to represent the sharp noise with a couple of straight lines going from a center to the outside.

6. Paper wrinkling: I did kind of like a round shape with an organic edge representing the sound of the movement wrinkling.

7. Someone knocking a door: Simple round shapes representing the hand and the different sizes is the variety of how low or high the noise was. The flat side of the round shape with a curved line in front of it is the side of the hand touching the door.

8. A book closing: I did a rectangle with some horizontal lines fading representing the sound and the air flowing.

Sound Map

This assignment was not one of my favorites because it is a little bit hard to represent a noise without thinking of the original shape of the object that is making the noise. However, I tried at least.

Designer blogs

Happy sunday everyone!

As for the homework, I found these interesting blogs.

http://abduzeedo.com/

Abduzeedo. What I love about this blog is that it is really easy to see it because of its simple design. Also, all of the post are very interesting, as for example, the Daily Inspiration post. Abduzeedo also introduces a lot of different designers or illustrators and I believe that makes the blog more interesting because we can get to know more artists.

http://www.youthedesigner.com/

You The Designer. This blog is very interesting too. In this blog you can see post that will help you inspire and another that would informed you. This blog also introduces different artists. The only thing I don’t like about this blog is that the images are too small and the description for each post is too long. The last post I loved from this blog is this one: http://www.youthedesigner.com/2013/01/22/dina-goldstein-and-the-darker-side-of-fairy-tales/

http://www.thedieline.com/

The Dieline. I definitely love this blog! It is very simple and very easy to use. The descriptions are very short and the images are big. This blog is about package design. It is amazing the evolution of packaging and how important it is now to have a good package design. In this blog we can see all of the different posts of beautiful packages of food, beauty supplies, or even candles!

These are the blogs I usually visit.

What makes some blogs stand out more than others? Definitely having big images. Images are more attractive than LONG descriptions. And if the image attracts me, I would read the post.

Exploration Assignment #2: Little Black Square

Hi Y’all!

The name of this assignment reminded me the exposition at the SCAD Museum “Little Black Dress”. Just saying…

for this exploration assignment we had to represent six words just with flat black squares. Here are my designs:

ORDER:

Representing this word was a little bit difficult because depending on the position of the squares it could be any of the other words. I believe this design is very simple and shows the meaning of the word ‘order’ because they are organized in two different lanes: big squares and small squares. This organization would create a pattern, which means ‘order’.

INCREASE:

I believe this word was the easiest one. I draw one lane of squares which goes from big to small. By changing the size of the squares, I represented the word ‘increase’.

BOLD

With this word I had to break the rules of just a ‘flat black square’. What I did in this design was change the thickness of the borders of the squares; the more thickness they have, the more bold they would look like.

CONGESTED

This is my favorite one. I placed a lot of squares, of different sizes, in just one spot while they are overlapping each other so it seems that it is overcrowded. There is an illusion of a thin white border around each square that is helping to demonstrate the word ‘congested’.

TENSION

This one was very easy to represent by just placing black square in different positions so it looks like they are about to fall.

Those are my designs for the exploration assignment #2. I am missing the word ‘PLAYFUL’, but i would upload it later on.

Thanks.

Repetition Grid Assignment

Hello everyone!

In this assignment we first had to create a motif. A motif is done when another shape takes a bite from another shape. I choose a pentagon and a diamond, as a result, I had a shape that looks like a spaceship.

On our next step, Ms. Waldvogel, photocopied my 1×1 in motif. Afterwards, I cut each and every little square.

This step was my favorite. We would have to draw a 10×10 in grid on a tracing paper and play with the tiles to create different designs. As you can see, I had enough options.

Here is the design I choose from all thinking that it was the most attractive:

Now, we would have to glue this tile to the tracing paper and create the inking plans by placing tracing paper over this design and ink the sections we would like.

And here is the Inking plan I chose:

And last but now least, my final design for the repetition grid assignment.

(sorry, I tried to rotate it but it did not work.)

Critique notes:

- The craftsmanship is not good enough. From far away people could see that it was not good.

-The relation between negative and positive space is good.

-The grid lines: some people did not like them at all, other agreed that it makes the design flow from top to bottom (bottom being the side from the little dots) and that the bottom grid line was not necessary because it makes you realize that it is falling, some others thought that the bottom line was necessary.

-It would better if it was a rectangular shape instead of a square shape.

THANK YOU FOR VISITING MY BLOG. More posts coming soon..

Concentration and Isolation

This are my final designs for the assignment of today’s class:

Isolation:

Concentration:

I have another design for concentration because I was not sure about which one is best.

Critique Notes

Well, well…

Regarding the critique notes, this is what I have:

-Glue can be your worst enemy, so use it wisely.

-The edges of the construction paper or from the bristol pad paper have to be perfectly alined.

-I you marked the paper with pencil, use the eraser because it does not look good.

-Using the right materials is the best thing it would ever happen in our lives.

-If there are edges of the construction paper going out of the frame of the drawing, cut them.

-Be aware of what the assignment is about.
