gaming concept

Category: Uncategorized

A game concept statement, or premise, is a short, direct description of the situation of a game. It describes the player’s goal, the opposition to that goal, and the means through which that goal will be accomplished. When dealing solely with the narrative portion of the script, the game concept statement reads like a screenplay pitch. Realistically, game play is described because it effects some elements of the storytelling. A short example might read as follows:

“In Trick or Treat the player characters have been trapped in the labyrinth of an ancient haunted house. They must escape by destroying adversarial monsters, avoiding traps, and solving the maze. Trick or Treat is a third person perspective action game.”

The goal of this writing is to give the reader a sense for the game. It should answer these basic questions:

  • What is the goal of the game?
  • How is the goal of the game accomplished?
  • What are the challenges to the game?
  • Where does the game take place?

Most people want to add marketing jargon and implementation specifics. This is simply a mistake. Reporting that is it is the best game ever, or that it will be available for the PS10 in 2020 just does not strengthen a concept. To put it bluntly, ths statement is about the concept. Concepts are general, high level notions. The concept of a car, for example, did not begin with the use of carbon fiber at the Indianapolis 500.

Do not include the following elements in a your writing:

  • Game platform (e.g. for the NES because I’m retro-chic)
  • Game rating (e.g. “M” for mature)
  • Game play specifics (e.g. controls)
  • Game programming details (e.g. uses recursive algorithms for speed)
  • Marketing (e.g. “more exciting than a ride on a roller coaster”)

There are exceptions to every rule. There are times when it is important to add implementation details. These are exceptionally rare situations, such as a game designed solely to exploit a new type of controller or for use on a non-standard game platform. In these cases, it makes sense to touch upon the distinguishing detail.

YouTube

Category: Uncategorized

To continue my research on Advertising on the Web, the next topic I would like to bring up is YouTube. While researching the bakcgournd and the success of YouTube I stumbled upon a link to the most viewed YouTube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjA5faZF1A8&feature=related.

Check it out! It’s pretty amazing.

Jumping back to more credible research. After reading the Groundswell by Li and Bernoff, they did a case study on a company called Blentec. Blendtec is a company that sells higly powerful blenders. George Wright, the marketing director, is the man responsible for finding a way to “talk” to the Groundswell, by using YouTube. Wright was inspired to create YouTube videos after he noticed saw dust on the floors in the tech room. They had been blending two-by-two lumber to test the strength of the blender. This is the idea that inspired him to create “Will It Blend?” with spokes person and CEO, Tom Dickson. After reaching a successful number of 60 million views and in response to the viewers suggestions, they blended an iPhone. Glorious.

YouTube, when used appropriately is a great way to advertise and create a social buzz about your product or business. One aspect about YouTube that makes it so popular and successful is that is incredibly cheap to create and upload compared to producing and airing a commercial on the TV. It also can bring in more sales because in this day in age, Web 2.0, there are far more people on the internet than there are watching TV.

Interstitial Videos

Category: Uncategorized

Interstitial Video Ads are an advertising video clip that is inserted in the middle of a complete MMS message. This video plays back as the subscriber is viewing the complete MMS message.

A MMS is a message sent via a Multimedia Messaging Service that contains multimedia objects.

Interstitial Research Continued…

An interstitial is advertising creative placed in-between the origin website and the destination website, either physically or in time. This clip pre-loads and waits on pause for viewer initiated playback. It also contains a hyperlink that is active while the video plays. Websites like them because they’re a further supplement to their ad revenue, and publishers like them because they appear to an entirely captive audience. From an advertiser’s standpoint, the draw of these ads is that the viewer is much more likely to absorb and pay attention to the information on screen. They can either pay attention to the ad while the site loads, or take the active step of “clicking through” the ad to go immediately to the content.

Either way, the conscious mind is much more likely to absorb the advertisement. What has been demonstrated time and time again is that this advertising does work, but only when done right. There are a number of ways a marketing campaign can use interstitial advertising to its advantage. Not coincidentally, the tactics employed by a successful interstitial ad are often the same strategies used by successful TV advertisements. Paul Caparotta, Ubisoft’s Online Advertising Manager, weighed in on online advertising: “It’s an important component of our online advertising program. Targeted ad units within specific content channels can drive users to engage with our site in a way that’s meaningful to them. They also supplement keyword, email, and other important marketing initiatives.”

“The primary point to remember with interstitial advertising is that it is an entirely different animal than the banner ad. It needs to have the flash and sizzle of a good TV ad and the focus to get the message across. To make effective use of the format, advertisers need to hook the viewer before they find the “go straight to” button and deliver a simple (and powerful) message. Not every ad needs to employ gimmicks, but taking advantage of the unique opportunities and limitations of the Interstitial ad format is crucial to maximizing marketing opportunities.”  -Judy Salzinger

What element in Web Design do I find the most important?

Category: Uncategorized

While navigation is the least interesting when it comes to browsing through a website, it remains the most important. Navigation is the most crucial element when designing a website. When creating a path for your website, you have to maintain a certain fluidity that will allow the visitor to get to the page they want to in no more that three clicks. Before you even think about the design or typographical elements in your website, you must start with a site map. When creating your site map, put your self in the visitors shoes. It’s easy for you to get somewhere on your website because you designed it. Make your navigation as simple and efficient as possible.

“A good site map and navigation menu on a web site will cut down the number of clicks required to move from one page to another. A thumb rule for good website navigation is to keep the number of clicks from one page to another at 3.”

http://www.webdevelopersnotes.com/tips/webdesig/importance_web_site_navigation_tips_site_maps.php3

Good navigation is a rule that should be applied to all websites. SO, this is why I am not doing my project solely on website navigation. Sorry, I want to get more out of this class then creating a genius site map. I would love to focus on another key aspect of websites, such as, content. Your website is only going to be as good as the content you put in it. And how you display your wealth of information and interesting facts should reflect the content you are so carefully presenting in your website.

Being an advertising grad student, I find it very appropriate to focus on the most modern uses of advertising. From forms of web banners, to private social networking sites, interstitial videos, the latest mobile ads, to the most “genius” uses of guerrilla advertising and beyond. While discussing the latest and the greatest in advertising, my website has to be as cutting edge as the content exuding from it. This is where the simplicity of powerful design will have to step in. As I develop my research and have put together my precious site map, I then will be able to see what color palette, technology, and typography the site will need. As an advertising designer, my goal is to use the web as a tool, a source of media, to convey my message and communicate to others the power of advertising today.

Ex 1: Good and Bad Website

Category: Uncategorized

Website I like:
Veer Type City
http://www.veer.com/ideas/typecity/gallery.aspx
Obviously, the typography is very intersting. It a city made of type! It easy to use and interactive to instise someone to stay on the website for a while. It’s an interactive way to introduce different type faces. It’s relaxing and entertaining as you travel through the city of type, listening to the elegant yet corky music. I like the simplicity of the color palette. It forces youto focus on the actual type and the city itself. The imagery is creative as they designed a city of type using iconic buildings that would be in your typical town out of what looks to be paper.

Website I do not like:
Biomet
http://www.biomet.com/regions/northAmerica/unitedStates.cfm
This website’s content is not as intersting as a sity built of type, but that is not the reason I chose this particualr website as a “website I do not like.” The structure of the website is very confusing. Only the creator would know where to find specific information. There search bar that seems to be helpful only pulls up tagged articles with the word you have written in the search bar. The menu bar is very limited so you have to dig threw the website to find your way. Each page is linked to another page. It’s a website full of randomness. Thumbs down to whoever created it. Maybe they should learn what a site map is.
