The Pitch! January 23, 2013

Our strict adherence to design “rules” may block our chances of creating fresh and authentic design that truly celebrates our individual voices and instincts. The purpose of my thesis is to explore the balance between teaching unchanging, objective design principles while still encouraging a freedom of expression that may yield unconventional design discoveries.

Well written, but I guess I’m wondering what new idea or evolution is being brought to the table. Design educators have long taught students to follow the rules, then break them once they understand them. Are you proposing something different in the exploration of balance? Jackson Pollack and Andy Wharhol come to mind as having free expression.

Good question. To be honest, I had a difficult time finding an idea worth pursuing that I am genuinely interested in. After a lot of thought, I realized that I have a passion for figuring out how students/people learn to be creative, and what situations encourage and foster the best creative solutions. With that said, I sometimes wonder if design “rules” prevent design students (and professionals) from truly creating unconventional design.

Hmmm… actually, writing this response has helped me to think about a way to restate my interests. Going to give it some more thought.

Thanks!
