Most of us are familiar with F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic 1925 novel, Great Gatsby. This Christmas the remake will hit the big screen and it has a lot of people talking. Right after the trailer was released the film was noted for having some of the best costume and fashion design of the year. Costume designer Catherine Martin successfully depicts 1920s fashion in a modern way. All the commotion around the movie is said to bring back the 20s feel to everyday style. Here are a few comparisons to the 1920s and today’s Great Gatsby fashion.

With the holiday season approaching quickly there are some exciting things happening in the world of collaborations. Many designers such as Missoni and …. have collaborated with Target in the past but this holiday its going to be a little different. Neiman Marcus is actually going to be collaborating with them which means a large group of designers. To name a few Oscar de la Renta, Marc Jacobs, Carolina Herrera , Brian Atwood, Alice + Olivia, Proenza Schouler, Tory Burch and Marchesa are some designers creating different lines for target. All the items will range from $7.99 to $499.99. This is one of the most anticipated collaborations in awhile and I am personally so excited for it. All the items will be available in stores and online starting December 1st.

Levi’s have started focusing on branding towards the young population, specifically 20-35. In thier most recent campaign, Go Forth, they really made an impact. With this campaign they really rebranded themselves from being a old American company to the forefront of fashion. From their website to their designs to their advertising Levis really turned themselves around. To understand a little more about the campaign you can go to..

I recently went to the company presentation on Razorfish and they showed some amazing marketing examples and I thought I would share them. These weren’t necessarily their marketing campaigns done at Razorfish but they just wanted to show how much marketing can really impact the consumer and a company/brand.

The most fascinating marketing campaign they went over was the Jay-Z/ Bing collaboration for Jay-Z’s book, Decoded. The idea was opening up the Bing website to younger viewers by slowly releasing pages of Decoded before it was in stores. This had amazing feedback for the book as well as Bing. They released each page in a very unique way. Watch the video below to see some of the ways the book was promoted.

Known as the most basic and essential piece in every women’s wardrobe, the LBD, has been around for many years. With the recent exhibition of the Little Black dress at the SCAD Museum of Art I wanted to take a look back on where it all started. Black dresses were never something very unheard of, but it was not until Coco Chanel made it famous in the 20s that it became a part of every women’s wardrobe. It was in 1926 when American Vogue published one of Chanel’s designs and identified it as “the shape of the future”. The idea of something so simple yet so elegant became popular so quickly. In the following years the LBD was shown in many different fabrics and design. Some of the more famous moments for the little black dress was Elizabeth Taylor in the 1950s, Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s in 1961, Princess Diana at a Serpentine gallery benefit in London in 1994, and more currently Angelina Jolie at the Oscars February 2012. With such a simple idea the LBD has been done and re-done in many unique ways. The SCAD exhibit, “The little black dress” brought 81 different ways the black dress has been executed. Some of the dresses included a 1957 lace cage Balenciaga, a 1907 Mariano Fortuny pleated silk Delphos dress, and a silk and paper taffeta Pierre Cardin tiered dress from the 1960s. The little black dress has been done many times throughout the decades and will keep being a part of fashion in the future.

“History will always repeat itself.” Fashion is always changing and adapting but this comment will always stand true. This year we are seeing many vintage inspired designs. Everywhere from the 20s to more recent years. What I love about fashion now is the ability for so many different designers and esthetics to be expressed. Not only one look or one style is in trend, but all types of designs are created for all markets. With this said, there are many designers that have clearly taken historical inspiration this season but the designer I want to focus on is Eva Franco.

Eva Franco is a designer from Transylvania, Romania and went to school at Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. She now lives in Los Angeles where her company is based and where the clothing is made. Franco is know for her girly esthetics and large reference to the 1950s. She takes the look of that era and modernizes it with fabrics and pattern. In her most recent collection Eva Franco designed many full skirt dresses, retro sunglass print, and high neck lines. This modern take on the 50s has gotten Franco in over 800 stores internationally as well as many online retailers.

Inspiration is defined as the process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something in a creative way. No matter what we are designing or creating something sparks an idea within us. I personally find inspiration is many area of life. One of my biggest inspiration is art. Whether it be a painting, photography, or even architecture I think art can be perceived differently to everyone and this gives us unique inspiration. Being inspired doesn’t mean taking something literal, but taking an idea and using that as a basis for a new one. Even though I choose to look at type of art as a strong inspiration, inspiration is found everywhere. Beyond art, I am inspired by culture, travel, and nature. I posted a few different types of images I like to find for inspiration.
