Patterns

Here is my favorite song from “Funny Girl”

I thought of “People” sung by Barbara Streisand after looking around Anderson for an hour. Sure, I saw physical patterns:

Yarn wrapped around a tree, two Volkswagen beetles parked next to each other, the bark on the plam tree, the paneling on the wall inside Anderson, the rust colored swirly stains on the bench outside, and the red and white striped dress of the painting on the way into Anderson.

My brain was on overload of other patterns around me: Georgia license plates, fence posts, cracks in the pavement, street signs, birds flocking together, etc.

Then I started noticing human patterns.

There were people smoking, J-walking, looking at their phones, looking at the ground, laughing. There were people drinking coffee, spilling coffee, dropping things.

There were people with hands in their pockets, holding grocery bags, sitting at Bobbie’s.

There were people staring out of windows (staring at me staring at them). And with all of these routines and patterns we do everyday, aren’t we just what the song “People” is about?

Aren’t we just “people who need people” ?
