Working in Retail

When I first started at SCAD I had no retail experience. My teacher informed me that I needed at least 1 year of retail experience to get into executive training program. With this new found knowledge in mind I went on a search for a job. Finding one proved to be difficult because everyone wanted an employee with previous retail. I branched out from Savannah and finally landed a job in Bluffton, SC working for Soma Intimates. I was determined to prove myself and within six months a position for a sales lead job came available and I got offered the job. I made a conscious effort to be a strong supervisor and show up to work on time. Three months later when our assistant manager decided to leave I got the call asking me if I would take the job. I believe with determination and a true interest in the company you work for then you can go far. My next step is to join Chicos on the corporate level. My store manager and District Manager fully support me in my endeavors and I feel confident that I will succeed in this company.

Inspiration for Mini Moi

For our brand we developed a concept for a sophisticated Childrenswear line called Mini Moi. We started our brand concepts by looking at S/S 2013 forecast for children’s wear. We wanted a neutral palette so we chose the forecast called Ashen. It depicts children in adult styles that showcase textures and shape not color as seen in traditional children’s wear.

Fashion in the Home

Home goods are becoming increasingly fashionable theses days. Items that used to be seen as strictly utilitarian are showing some flare. Many stores are even mixing home goods into their merchandise lineups. Anthropologie has been quite successful with their whimsical collections. I personally am loving the capability of adding my own unique touches to my home with small decor items. Stores such as William-Sonoma, Pottery Barn, and Crate and Barrel have capitalized on the category of home goods.

Best Branding

Branding is one of the most successful elements to any company. Some major companies that come to mind when I think of branding are Coca Cola, Apple, and Nike. These brands are recognized worldwide and many times just by a logo. Apple has branded itself as the leader in premium technology. Their commercials Mac vs PC really brought them to the forefront for all consumers. They went from being a specialty computer to competing directly with PCs for at home users market share. Coca Cola has become such an integrated brand into society. People won’t eat at restaurants if they don’t carry Coke products. Also who doesn’t recognize that red and white can the second they set eyes on it. Nike has become an international brand with a huge following. People won’t wear any other shoes but Nike. They have branded themselves as a leader in workout technology. All of these brands have almost cult like followings with die hard consumers refusing to shop anywhere else or drink another brand. Some of the key concepts in these companies are recognizable logos, continuous quality, and a clear message to their consumers.

Finding reinterpretation of historical influencer in today’s fashion

History has a way of repeating itself. This is apparent in modern day fashion. At some point in history those garments came to fruition. We have grecian style dresses, ball gowns, and trousers for women. At some point in mankind’s history these items were created and part of the fashion of the period. How many times do we hear the comment, “the 80s are back or that collection was inspired by the 60s?” History shapes our future therefore it will always have a play in fashion. Some designers follow closely to the aesthetic of the historical piece and others really revamp the traditional look and modernize it. Recently I looked into Charles Worth and discovered that the House of Worth had reopened. Their new designer Giovanni Bedin wanted to incorporate the original concepts of Charles Worth but make them suited to the modern consumer. Bottega Veneta used inspirations from the 40s for his Spring 2013 RTW collection and Raf Simons first couture show for Christian Dior was inspired by him to reconnect with the house and how it all began. History is among us and will constantly have a place in the fashion world. To evolve upon history can lead to greater futuristic achievements.

Inspiration

Her giggles in the morning and kisses goodnight all inspire me to evolve as a person and make a great life for me and her. My three year old daughter Ryenne is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of the word inspiration. When she was born I knew I had to reevaluate what I wanted to do in life. When I found the fashion marketing program at SCAD I knew that’s where I belonged. Clothes can evoke emotions in people without them knowing it. The perfect suit makes you feel powerful and that amazing dress makes you feel like you are the most gorgeous girl in the room. People can express their creativity and who they truly are as a person with the outfit they choose in the morning. All these things inspire me to work in the fashion industry to provide people with an amazing outlet. Now that I have expanded my knowledge of the art world, business world, and fashion world, my inspirational avenues have grown. I look at pieces of art and see emotions or read an article on upcoming companies and imagine what I will do in my career to help shape our evolving world. My daughter inspired me to be a better person and because of her I now feel inspired by all the little things in life and appreciate what inspiration can do for a person’s life.

The Little Black Dress

It’s amazing to see the evolution of the little black dress over the many years since Chanel made it famous in the 20s. Walking through the new exhibition at SCAD really shows the many ways different designers have recreated this iconic piece of clothing. The Little Black Dress exhibit showcases some premiere designers work and has history and modern dresses all mixed together. It’s interesting to look at all the little details of these dresses because that is the key to making a LBD stand out. I went the night of the opening and it was interesting to hear everyone talking about the different pieces. It gets me to look at the dresses in new ways when I hear another person’s take on the piece. I returned to the exhibit again to take a closer look at all of the gorgeous dresses without the crowds and saw new details that I missed the first time. Overall this exhibition is amazing and I encourage everyone to take their time and just take in all the little elements.
