SOI SENIOR SHOW

Reception:
Friday, May 28th 5pm-7pm

Location:
Savannah Mall Gallery

Submission Guidelines:
2-4 of your best pieces (some pieces may be excluded due to space)
Must be uniformly framed with mats and ready to hang (hanging wire on back or o-rings).
Include a list of information including Artist name, Piece Title, Medium and Price.
MUST fill out Liability Form AND bring with on art drop off date (see attached document)

Art Drop off Due Date:
Thursday May 13th 8pm, Morris Hall Room 201(SOI meeting)

Gallery Set up:
Friday-Sunday, May 14th-16th VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!

COMMUNICATION ARTS SENIOR SHOW

BARNES AND NOBLE BOOK FAIR SOI FUNDRAISER

When:
Mother’s Day, May 14th 10am-5pm

Location:
Barnes and Noble at Oglethorpe Mall

The Barnes and Noble book store at Oglethorpe mall is hosting an SOI Artist Alley on Mother’s Day. This event will give anyone apart of SOI the chance to show their portfolio, works or any books (such as those from Book or Children’s Book class) on tables set up specifically for us. We will also be creating complimentary art work upon request (portraits, drawings for kids etc). Barnes and Noble will be donating a percentage of any books sold that day by those who have specific vouchers from SOI or from those who mention our club at the registers.

If you have questions about any of the above information or are interested in participating in the Senior show and/or Barnes and Noble, please contact me atsoi@scad.edu.

SOI Meeting Minutes

—Barnes And Nobel Artist Alley Event—
Event: Barnes and Noble at Oglethorpe Mall, Friday, May 14th

We will have the opportunity to show case work as well as sit and sketch for customers upon request at Barnes and Noble for a few designated hours.
During that time a percentage of all sales Barnes and Nobles makes will be donated to the SOI.
It’s a great opportunity to do some quick sketches, show case your work as well as fast commissions.

—Russian Propaganda Contest—
DEADLINE: is April 23, 2010 by 12 noon to artsadmin@scad.edu

This is a contemporary propaganda poster project inspired by the Builders, Bolsheviks, and Bulldozers exhibition at the Pei Ling Chan gallery. Design a poster concerning a 21st century political, social, or economic issue.
April 30, 2010, submissions will be displayed and winners announced at Student Night at the Pei Ling Chan gallery

Final poster must be 11″ x 14″ PDF (300 dpi) and you must include your NAME, MAJOR, HOMETOWN, and CONTACT INFO. Submissions will be judged by SCAD faculty, and winning entries will be awarded prizes!

—Senior Show—
Communication Arts will be holding a Senior Show this year.One piece will be selected from each submitting artist
The works will be show cased in a large collaborative atmosphere in a gallery with peers from other departments.

—Sidewalk arts Festival—
EVENT: Saturday, April 24, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. in Forsyth Park between Drayton and Whitaker Streets.
SOI has booked three squares (230,231,232)

The Sidewalk Arts Festival will draw thousands of visitors to view temporary chalk masterpieces created by SCAD students, alumni and prospective students on the sidewalks of Savannah’s historic park.
Please let us know if you want to participate and plan to have a blast

—Savannah Children’s Book Poster Contest—
Design a poster for the library’s annual book festival, scheduled for Nov. 20, 2010, at Forsyth Park.

Meeting Minutes Thursday, February 25th

OUR 2ND TO LAST MEETING:

Humane Society Show Opening Reception
-The Humane Society Show reception will be held at the Savannah Mall Gallery from 1-4pm on Sunday, February 28th. The Savannah Mall Gallery is located in the Savannah Mall on the 1st floor near Target.
-Prizes will be awarded to winning participants in the judged show, and there will be food and refreshments available. Some animals from the Humane Society will also be present!!!

Volunteer Work
-SOI is in desperate need of volunteers to help with:

  • Merchandise
  • Cutting magnets and bookmarks
  • Mounting final pieces
  • Hanging for the show on Saturday, Feb. 27th

It would be great if volunteers would bring extra rulers, exacto knives, cutting mats, and scissors.

-SOI Donut Sale volunteers are also needed for next week! We will be selling donuts in Morris!

Poster Propaganda Project

Hand of God Illustration Competition
-This is a fee-free illustration contest from Penguin Books! Winners artwork will be featured by Penguin Books. Please check out the website for more information!

Coming Next Quarter
-Barnes & Noble sketching will give SOI members and other SCAD students the opportunity to sketch people for a period of time. During that period of time, SOI will receive a percentage of Barnes & Noble book sales!

NEXT MEETING, THE LAST MEETING of the quarter, will be March 11th! Don’t worry, it will be a relaxing get-together before the start of Spring Quarter! And, perhaps even a potluck and a movie! Food, friends, and a movie: should be fun!

Meeting Minutes Thursday, Feb. 11

Guest Speaker Prof. Andrew Nedd
- Professor Andrew Nedd from the Art History department discussed the history behind the Russian propaganda posters exhibition at Pei Ling Chan Gallery called Builders, Bolsheviks, and Bulldozers. The exhibit will be at the gallery from March 23-April 30.
- Andrew Nedd also announced a Propaganda Poster Project, a poster contest sponsored by the Arts Administration Department.

Humane Society Show at Savannah Mall Gallery
-Final work is due Feb. 19th in digital format: high resolution (300 dpi), with Humane Society logo (download from SOI blog), and on a hard copy CD or DVD along with liability form (download from SOI blog)
-1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners will be determined by department faculty.
-Reception will be held at the Savannah Mall Gallery on Sunday, February 28 from 1-4pm. The Humane Society will have animals up for adoption during the reception!!! So, you can at least come to see them!

24-Hour Valentine’s Day Competition
- Work on a Valentine’s Day themed piece and submit it within 24 hours (well, a little be longer) for a surprise prize! Very short-notice, but it’s a fun competition.
- Pieces should be submitted digitally (300 dpi), and e-mailed to soi@scad.edu by 5pm Saturday, February 13!

Next SOI meeting will be Thursday, February 25th at normal time and place!
