To be honest, about 2/3rds of the American contestants don't know what they're singing about either! I think they act a bit like parrots - they can repeat what they've heard, but it doesn't mean anything to them. That might also explain why I heard a contestant audition by singing "Happy Birthday"...
Oh, well in that case, yes I DO think of the bavarian lifestyle. My, if I got that mixed up then I need to do some more Germany research! =P
Not many Americans know German, unfortunately, but those who do are considered to be highly intelligent. Personally I'm a bit horrible with foreign languages, though I do know how to count to ten in French. =D
Gespräch mit Ihnen später!

hehe, well i think maybe 2/3rd of the contestants here in germany don´t even know what they are singeing about when they sing tohose songs in english. the english language is a school subject in our educational system , so most people can speak at least a bit english =)
and maybe they pronounce the words right, because they heard the same song like 100 times - so they know the text and how to sing the words =)
the things you discribed above about germany is the bavarian lifestyle - but i´m fine with that ;)

I went and looked up some videos- there was a lot lost to me because of the language barrier, but I got the gist of it. I have to say it's a bit disorienting to hear someone chatting away in German and then start singing in English. I'm surprised so many of the contestants can pronounce the words properly! I had to sing a French song once and people thought I was singing about potatoes. Do many German people speak English?
To be honest, I do think about bratwurst, but when I hear Germany I usually picture people dancing in a beer hall and wearing those green folk outfits. Course, when people hear America they think of skinny, barely clad teenagers singing pop songs and dancing provocatively, and that's only one eighth of our country. The rest of the country is a bunch of overweight, barely clad teenagers singing pop songs and dancing provocatively. =P

thank you ! =)
well you may find a lot of video footage for "dsds" on youtube by searching for "dieter bohlen dsds" (he´s the german Simon Cowell ^^) but if you expect to hear people singing german songs i must disappoint you . most songs are english... sadly.
most people in the states think of bavarian lifestyle, rhineland and bratwurst when they hear germany =P - but thats just two sixteenth of our country over here - nobody ever will sing a german folk song at such a contest for real =)
