HP Week

Historic Preservation Week 2009
May 3-8, 2009

Each May, the Student Preservation Association (SPA) hosts Preservation Week, an engaging week-long lecture series with a concentration on historic preservation. The series is held in May in correspondence with the National Trust’s Preservation Month. Through this series the students of the School of Building Arts gain exposure to the most inspiring, forward-thinking preservation minds of the 21st century, and gain an insight to the lives of preservationists in the field. This outcome is in direct accordance with the mission statement of the Student Preservation Association.
Each year, SPA creates a theme or idea to focus on for the series. This year, the theme is International Preservation. The theme was appropriately chosen to celebrate the kickoff of the International Preservation Program beginning at SCAD in the fall. SPA invited guests with various concentrations to lecture on a wide variety of international topics, from Russian architecture and mosque architecture across the Middle East, to urban conservation studies around the globe.

SPA is proud to announce the keynote lecturer, Anthony M. Tung. “Preserving the World’s Great Cities: the Destruction and Renewal of the Historic Metropolis” is Anthony Tung’s first book, an extensive architectural survey and urban conservation analysis of eighteen major cities around the world, from Amsterdam to Singapore. Anthony Tung has also worked in the United States as a New York City Landmarks Preservation Commissioner. It is a great honor to host him for Preservation week this year.

The schedule is in the process of being finalized and it will be posted here when it is. All events are free and open to the public. Stay tuned!
