Next Quarter

Posted by hillel in Uncategorized

Hey Everyone,

I hope finals are going well for everyone. Can you believe we have less than a week remaining in this quarter?! I know I can’t!

And speaking of next quarter we are in need of some ideas for meetings. I know you guys are dying to let us know what you want to see done with SCAD Hillel, and Heather and I are really looking for some input. So email or comment your suggestions to Hillel, and really share some ideas! If you guys really love just getting together for movie nights and holidays that’s fine too. We aren’t going to mess with that stuff, but if there’s anything new and exciting you want to see happen you have to let us know.

Good Luck with finals!

In2Books

Posted by hillel in Uncategorized

Hey Everyone!

I have a great opportunity for everyone! If anyone has to do volunteering for a club or just because you want to this is a great idea! It’s called IN2BOOKS and its an online pen pal program that promotes reading in public schools especially here in Savannah.

This is a very fun activity to help local children love reading. It does require a year long commitment from you the pen pal while the child is in school. At the beginning of the school year you will be matched with a student and exchange getting to know you letters via the website. Then the child selects their first book while you can find it at the library or buy it on your own. It does require some reading on your part, but don’t freak too fast. These are elementary school children so 3rd-5th graders. It won’t be a stretch to read these books. In total you read about 5 books over the school year and ask them questions about their books and help to make reading a fun and interesting experience! Becoming a pen pal is easy to do.

1. Go to the website www.in2books.com and click on left hand bar that says “become a pen pal.” This begins the registration process. You will be asked for a background check, but its completely painless and quick.

2. Be sure to enter Savannah from the  drop down list when asked for your affiliation on the registration page.

3. The next step is the background check page (very easy) Use the promotion code SAV599. It should be completely free.

If you guys want to do this send a quick email to Hillel giving us a heads up, and you will have our utmost thanks!

Congregations in Service

Posted by hillel in Uncategorized

This weekend is Congregations in Service, an annual event at which churches and synagogues throughout the community work together on various charitable activities. This year is the first time that the Jewish community is part of it and they would love Hillel student to join in. There are a number of projects, some requiring physical activity, others to be performed sitting at Mickve Israel.  These are the options:

For those who prefer to remain at Mickve Israel, there are 3 options:

– Pillowcases - An arts and crafts project to decorate pillowcases for children at Greenbriar Children’s Center.

–Children’s books - Gently used books are being collected for distribution to children served by the Backpack Buddies’ program. They will need to be sorted, catalogued, and organized.

–Creating greeting cards (for holiday wishes, or other well-wishing) for the family members at Ronald McDonald House. Art supplies will be on hand, no special art skills are necessary.  This is a newly introduced project, which would be very beneficial to the R.M. House.

Outdoor projects include:

– Union Mission Gardening - Landscaping, planting, yard work around the exterior of the site.

– Bacon Park Trail- Clearing of newly developed walking-trail area.

People will meet at Mickve Israel on Sunday 11/1 at 12:30 for a light pizza lunch and brief interfaith prayer, joined by members of the Christian and Muslim communities. We will then divide up into groups, some heading out to project sites, others, working at Mickve Israel. Transportation will be provided for anyone who needs it.

Joanie Dane-Kellogg is coordinating the participation and would like to know if you can participate. Please contact her by phone 912-308-5596 or e-mail (jdanekellogg@comcast.com)

Sunday, Sunday, Sunday!

Posted by hillel in Uncategorized

Don’t forget everyone who volunteered that the annual Jewish Food Festival is this Sunday from 10:00-4:00. I hope everyone comes out to have fun not only volunteer. A reminder that there’s no entrance fee, but that there is a fee for the food sampled.

See you there!

Taste of the World!

Posted by hillel in Uncategorized

Hey Everybody,

Coming up on November 6th is the Taste of the World festival, being a cultural club on campus we thought it’d be a great idea to sign up and show some Israel love! If any of you have participated in past years forget all that because this year is going to be different. We don’t have to cook the food ourselves all we need to do is provide recipes and hands to serve the day of. If any of you are interested I’ll be holding a planning meeting this week.

When: Wednesday October 21st 6:00 pm

Where: Orleans Square

It should be a relatively quick planning meeting just a meet and greet to exchange recipes and ideas. If you can’t make the meeting, but would like to attend email Hillel or comment right here.

Hope to see you there!

Ideas?!

Posted by hillel in Uncategorized

I hope everyone had fun last night in the sukkah, and thanks to all of you who volunteered for the Jewish Food Fest-much appreciated! You guys should be getting more information about that soon.

On a related note we (okay me) have hit a road block for Hillel event ideas. If you guys have any thing you want to see done that hasn’t been as of yet, comment on this post. We need things that can take place on SCAD campus and don’t involve alcohol, so unfortunately shabbat dinners are out, but talk to us if you’d like to host one.

See You Soon,

Edit: Has anyone seen that Shakira video She Wolf? Why does it confuse me?

Jewish Food Festival

Posted by hillel in Uncategorized

So Stephanie totally crashed the Mickve Israel Sukkot dinner-completely unintentional- and as such was informed of some very juicy info. Mickve Israel is host to the one and only Jewish Food Fest held in Forsyth Park that has been going on for the last 20 years, and they have asked us to help make the 21st extra amazing by volunteering!!! There will be a variety of booths to work, including those without food like coffee and sodas, so don’t feel like you have to be a Jewish iron chef.

When: October 25th 1-4 pm

Where: Forsyth Park

If interested email Hillel (you know the drill) and RSVP by October 20th. The local Jewish community does a lot for SCAD Hillel and this is our chance to say thank you for the many, many dinners they have helped to serve.

Best~

Pizza Party @ Mickve Israel!

Posted by hillel in Uncategorized

Come join us for a night in the sukkah at Mickve Israel on October 8th at 8:00 pm!

We will be eating pizza under the fall stars! Attendance is open so feel free to bring a friend, but remember to RSVP by October 7th at midnight so we can get a head count for the pizza ordering.

And don’t forget to introduce yourselves to me- my newest goal of the quarter is to learn the names of all our Hillel members because I’m just not crazy enough.

Best~

Yom Kippur!

Posted by hillel in Uncategorized

Hope everyone had a fun time at Yom Kippur, I know my roommate are enjoying some midnight kugel right now, and its delicious. Unfortunately someone left a bag filled with paper inside and a receipt from Ex Libris. I’m holding onto it, so if you didn’t get my email yet. (my first email using SCAD’s web-mail so bear with me) just shoot me an email at fmusch20@student.scad.edu. And look forward to a pizza party pretty soon! I’ll post more on that later.

Best.

Stephani
