This project was the most time consuming of all the projects so far, I tried to stray away from using “go to” objects to like sticks of cracks in the ground to form my letters and numbers. After several hours of walking all around Savannah I think I’ve come up with a fairly original set of images.

I first cut out all the states I have lived in Texas, Colorado, and Georgia. I then taped the map to the wheel of my car thinking it would give it a nice “distressed” look, instead my map looked like it was mauled by bears. So then I thought it would be wise to burn the map a little, once again I failed and ended up with a bag of ashes. So I got to thinking and I ended up using my ash to tone a piece of water color paper. I then used the states I had cut out before as a sort of stencil or resist if you will and wiped away at the ash with a shammy. This was what i ended up with and I’m very pleased with the overall execution and aesthetic of the piece.

  • Make sure the story line is coherent to your piece.
  • Really think about if some element work towards or against finishing the piece.
  • Always have your piece properly presented.

At first our group struggled to collaborate and sort of warm up to each other, but once we figured it out i was pretty pleased with our overall piece.

Critique Notes

  • Avoid repeated compositions i.e. use of diagonal lines in more than one composition 
  • Always remember Economy less is sometimes more and k you should really think about if each piece is absolutely necessary to your overall piece.
  • No focal points right in the middle its hard for the viewers eye to stray away from that one spot.

Critique Notes

1/30/13

- Avoid centered focal points.

- If your design consist of a repeated pattern still keep in mind you can have variety within a pattern.

-Craftsmanship goes a long way when it comes to the overall aesthetic of a piece.

-Remember “economy” when deciding if your piece needs a border or not.

Final Thoughts

I thought that this project was difficult especially when it came down to the placement and inking of the motif.

Not only was the actual inking hard, but making sure that your plan looked deliberate and added to the overall piece was also pretty difficult .

  • Don’t have too much or too little contrast.
  • Don’t fill corners just cause your design doesn’t already occupy them.
  • Divide up negative space and avoid having continuos negative space.
  • Split negative space in to shapes or their own (sub-dividing).

    I choose my final four designs on the basis of originality, balance, and line. I think the four chosen best exemplify these three design elements. I’m pleased with the overall project and think I accomplished everything within the assignments guidelines.
