A letter from Associate Chair.

“Graphic design is a problem-solving methodology driven by analytical and structural thinking. A graphic designer is not merely a utilitarian visual mechanic but a consilient auteur of the ‘desire of the other.’ Our creativity comes from an in-depth understanding of communication processes through ontology, semiotics, linguistics, epistemology and structuralism.

Confrontation, which is a process of critical antithesis against a generic thesis, leads us to a constructive and productive synthesis. The visual outcome is simply a natural result of this evolution, but it is neither what graphic design is, nor what defines a graphic designer.

Our faith in an engineered process of dissection makes us enjoy every step and every moment of creative challenge as designers full of passion, enthusiasm and excitement. We can imagine our lives as a continuous Stendhal syndrome of our own design.

Structural process designers of SCAD Graphic Design, unite!

Henry Hongmin Kim
Associate Chair of Graphic Design

Everything is design. We design everything. Design is everything.”

Recent course evaluations from students (alphabetical order)

“Professor Babb is a real gem. I thoroughly enjoyed this class.”
“Fantastic portfolio pieces. Fantastic teacher. Lisa is very passionate about her work, and willing to work with the students”

“I absolutely loved my professor. Heather is truly on of the best here at SCAD. She gets why we are here and understand that we are students who want to become better artists. Her critiques are detailed and very challenging! Thank you for hiring such a brilliant professor.”
“To be completely honest, I don’t have any suggestion. I am completely satisfied with what I got out of the class and am looking forward to taking more classes with Heather.”

“Amazing class and I have learned so much and I feel that this class has pushed me to the point where I know that this is what I am meant to do in my life, and not only that, I realized that I am pretty good at it too. I would like to give Henry a special thanks for that.”
“Professor Kim is one of the best professors I’ve had at SCAD. He knows the subject very well, he always has an answer, he knows how to explain himself and he pushes students a lot. Even when students think they know everything, he squeezes the best out of them and makes them realize they can do better.”
“I have to say that since I’ve attended SCAD there has not been another class that I found to be so thought provoking. Professor Kim pushed us to think more and be mindful of every choice we make when creating something. He is an amazing professor and I cannot wait to take another class with him. Most importantly, he was never bias and focused only on the work when it came to students different styles.”

“Professor Mandel is always so sweet, caring and very knowledgable. She provides to a great learning experience !”
“Great Professor, great course.”
“Mandel is a really engaging professor who really knows what she is talking about. I would recommend her to my peers. She is tough and sometimes wants your work to reflect her ideas rather than your own which can be a struggle if you are really trying to push your own concept. I still really learned a lot from her and would take another course with her. She is incredibly intelligent and fosters a really good learning environment.”

Holly is an amazing teacher, and by far among the best at this school.”
“Can’t wait to take this teacher again.”
“Truly enjoyed this teacher. She is gold.”

“I like Professor, Roseman!! I really enjoyed typography class and was interesting journey.”
“I really enjoyed this class. I think it has been a very beneficial class for me to further my career in the graphic design field. I enjoy Professor Roseman’s teaching methods for typography. At first I debated on these methods but now I fully appreciate what it has taught me.”

“This has by far been one of my favorite classes I’ve taken at SCAD. This has everything to do with Professor Wong. His knowledge has really opened my eyes to what is to come after graduation. This real world approach to the projects and the focus on what’s needed to go in to the workforce is what makes this class so educational. The things I have learned here will greatly help me in my career to come.”
“This was a great course and a great experience and the things I learned here will definitely make a difference in my career after graduation. A good teacher makes all the difference and Professor Wong is one of the best here at SCAD.”

“I believe that Chung is an excellent instructor and a good person to know. He is gifted and talented in his field.”

“I think the teacher is great. Hao knows her material. She was always there to answer questions.”
“Keep being awesome, Hao.”

Courtney ROCKS and is a refreshing addition to the GRDS department.”
