New Tech for Apple, Will Audiences Approve? Does it Matter?
February 14, 2012 | 9 Comments
Tech Blog Gizmodo posted the possible new specs for the next generation of MacBooks. They’ll be better, stronger, faster, lighter, and all the other Lee Majors/Kanye/Daft Punk references that you can throw at it. However, the biggest adjustment for our more *ahem* mature users is that there will be a lack of legacy-based ports; meaning no ethernet or Firewire ports.
Bold move, Apple. Bold move.
Lots of other good changes in the works, it seems. Check out the article here, http://tinyurl.com/7kba5u9, to see if they missed anything.

These changes feel progressive and relevant to a more productive laptop device, but I feel like this article doesn’t directly relate to my sense of a better performing laptop because I will ONLY buy PC laptops!
Getting rid of a firewire port doesn’t really affect me. Now that USB technology has improved, I can’t even remember the last time I used the firewire port. iPods don’t even come with the firewire cable anymore.
But getting rid of an ethernet port is a pretty big deal, since I know plenty of people that are still directly connecting to a wall for their internet rather than a wireless router.
And no hard drive?! Saving to the cloud is a huge risk, no backup to the cloud!
To be honest, the only thing mentioned here that would directly affect me would be the full wrist-rest trackpad, I’m not sure how solid that technology would turn out to be (I imagine it would be rather easy to break).
Overall, though, I feel I may be rather behind in the technology world, all I care about updating is battery life and storage/speed capabilities. I have chosen Mac as my main medium, but only for speed and easy navigability. I would prefer to have a removable hard drive and battery in case of emergencies, but maybe i’m just too old school for the fast-changing world of Apple.
While I’m not loving the idea of a full surface trackpad, some of the developments could potentially be pretty amazing. I already know personally how much better Thunderbolt is compared to USB so its no surprise that they are focusing on that. The battery life is probably what I am most excited about considering that is always a setback for a laptop.
This is a prime example of taking simple and sleek too far where you start losing sight of the function of the product and more focus is placed on aesthetics. Looks like I will always be a PC.
All of the possible new changes that were mentioned in the article all seem like logical progressive ones. I think removing some of the legacy components will be a big step considering thunderbolt hasn’t been widely integrated into other devices yet.
I love the idea of the full surface trackpad and even though I am COMPLETEY against using iCloud, getting rid of the hard drive might even be a good idea.
But Apple has taken it too far by losing the ethernet port. At the moment, when my wireless internet isn’t working, I have no choice but to plug my computer up to the wall. What would I do if I were to buy a brand new laptop this year? I love my mac. I would hate to have to switch just because of that small detail.
MacBooks to me should have some power but I would want to go to a desktop to do my major work, so the focus on aesthetics don’t bother me as much. Either way I can’t wait to see this come out.
As most of the additions to the new Macbook pro are cool such as the retina display and the graphics, allowing the battery life of a laptop to last for an entire day is a huge selling point. I’m constantly running around trying to find my charger, when I’ve only used my laptop for 2 hours or so.
