As graphic design has become a driving cultural force of the 21st Century, we as emerging visual communicators must choose to be accountable for the creative, communicative, and consumerist actions dictated by our professional practices.

We recognize the power of visual language in the ever-evolving culturally complex world of human communications. The past two decades have been significantly influenced by the expanding technological means of communication. These new forms and modes of interaction require us to look more creatively and curiously at our ever–changing environment. We must choose to more appropriately serve our field and our world. We must plow through this new landscape of technological invention with greater innovation; our actions must be informed by the intention of our outcomes and not the trends of current technology or aesthetics.

We, the visual communicators of the 21st Century, possess the power to create the objects, artifacts and experiences necessary for humanity to navigate through life.

In order to fulfill our cultural, social and professional responsibilities we encourage the following:

  1. Design is a way of thinking, not just an act of making.
  2. Don’t rely on technology or a limited tool palette.
  3. Know and respect the past, but don’t let it dictate the future.
  4. The message should always be accessible, not necessarily obvious.
  5. Be responsible to yourself, to your profession, and to your community. Design with a conscience.
  6. Speak to all aspects of the human experience…visual, tactile and emotional.
  7. Value craft, imaginative thinking, technical skills, creative communication and collaboration.
  8. Always question the basics, listen carefully, explain thoughtfully.
  9. Design with a purpose.
  10. Do not decorate; translate.
