Ceremony Participation
Starting in 2013, SCAD Savannah will have two commencements each year: One at the end of fall quarter and one at the end of spring quarter. Any student planning to participate in a commencement ceremony must complete an online graduation application through MySCAD and receive approval from the graduation auditor for your school/major. Deadlines for anticipated graduating terms are:
- Fall 2012……………..June 1, 2012
- Winter 2013………..January 11, 2013
- Spring 2013…………March 29, 2013
- Summer 2013……..June 29, 2013
You should complete the application two quarters prior to the completion of your degree requirements. Students must email their graduation auditor (see Contact Information) in order to change ceremony participation status if they indicated “undecided” on their graduation application.
Students who complete all degree requirements during winter or spring will participate in the spring commencement ceremony. Students who complete all degree requirements in summer or fall will participate in the fall commencement ceremony.

Presidential Conferment of Degree – 9a.m.
This ceremony is the procession of all graduating students. In attendance are the college president and the board of trustees, guest speaker(s), SCAD faculty and deans This is an exciting occasion that includes these distinguished guests and a presentation depicting the previous year in review. The guest speaker, excelsus laureate and valedictorian address the graduating class and the family and friends students have chosen to celebrate this important milestone in their lives. President Paula Wallace confers all degrees and the entire student body turns the tassels on their caps at the president’s direction to signify their impressive achievements. All participants recess from the auditorium at the conclusion.
Presentation of Degree – 1p.m. or 4p.m.
These ceremonies are divided by schools. Graduating students are announced and cross the stage to be presented with a diploma cover (diplomas are not given during commencement…they are mailed to students). Your photograph is taken as you shake hands with the dean of your school. The two ceremonies are divided as follows:
1p.m. School of Communication Arts
School of Design
School of Fashion
School of Fine Arts
4p.m. School of Building Arts
School of Digital Media
School of Entertainment Arts
School of Liberal Arts
Students must have completed a graduation application, met all requirements and been approved to participate by a graduation auditor to be recognized in the ceremony and receive tickets for guests. Only students who are participating in the ceremony will receive tickets.
Students participating in the Atlanta commencement should refer to the SCAD-Atlanta page of this blog for further information.

How long does the Presidential Conferment portion of graduation usually last? Is there a significant amount of time between this and the Presentation of Degrees portion?
The Presidential Conferment lasts approximately one hour, but could be longer depending on the speaker. There is roughly two hours between the end of the 9am ceremony and the time students are due back for the 1 pm ceremony, if that is the ceremony for their school. Students should be back for the 1pm ceremony at 12:30.
