Tales From Generate, Episode 1 September 29, 2011
Posted by David Spencer in : Animation, Interactive Design and Game Development, Updates , comments closedThis is the first is a series of anecdotal stories from Generate events past. When I tell students “the cult of the all-nighter is a lie”, I mean it. Mostly. Generate is the exception to the rule. It’s a chance to experiment as well as hang out with your peers and your professors outside of the context of the classroom. And as an aside, for the past four years it’s been the way I’ve celebrated my birthday. So sit back and listen as Old Man Spencer pulls his rocking chair up to the fireplace, lights his pipe, and waxes nostalgically about the Generates.
Once upon a time (or in the three weeks before the start of this quarter), a team of filmmakers descended upon our quaint little campus. They were making a made-for-TV movie for NBC. The movie is about a group of intrepid youths in their first year at a top-notch game design institute. So they really had no choice but to come to SCAD. In the process of working with the director on various aspects of the film, he and his production team were asking me, “What does it look like?” What does it look like when we’re doing our thing? Not the pictures in the catalog; they wanted the real gritty “grace under pressure” “in the moment” stuff. I needed to look no further than the Generate blog archive to show them images of us in our natural habitat, doing what we do best: creating amazing things under barely doable time constraints. Celebrating successes, and maybe getting a little goofy.
The director loved it. Not only were the candid photos helpful to inform the tone of the movie and the performances of the young actors, but also he was so charmed by some characters from Prof. Tseng’s Interactive Character Challenge of ’08 that they ended up being used in the movie. Way to go Generators Vivi Qin and Tito Huang! Keep an eye out for BunnyBoy and Whaley in “The Game of Your Life”, which airs Dec. 2 on NBC.
So if you’re on the fence, undecided about participating, I say cowboy up! Stop waffling, pick a challenge and go for it. You never know what may come of it. Stay tuned for more inspiring Tales From Generate…
