Students can submit photos of an originally designed runway-ready cotton outfit for a chance to have their design in the Cotton 24 Hour Runway Show in South Beach, Miami! Cotton Incorporated will select the 10 winning looks to be featured in the Cotton 24 Hour Runway Show as well as fly the designers of the winning garments to Miami for an all-expense paid trip to see their look on the runway!
To submit photos of the garment(s), students must be registered for Cotton University™. To register go to www.cottonuniversity.org (must be registered on the site as a “student” profile).
Once a student is on their Cotton University™ account they can then go to their profile page(click on their name by profile picture) where they will see an orange button on the right-”Apply now for Cotton’s 24 hour design contest” (this button only appears on “student” website profiles).
Contest details:
- You must be a student enrolled in a 2-year or 4-year college degree program to enter the contest
- Submitted entries must be photos of fully constructed/finished garments and looks
- Each garment must contain at least 60% cotton
- Entries must be an entire cotton look from head-to-toe (excluding shoes and accessories)
- No collaboration on garments
- Garment designs must relate to the theme: “Casual but cool weekend daywear/sportswear”
- Garment size requirements: Average male model size-(height 6’ 1.5”, waist 31, suit 40L, neck 15.5, and inseam 32.5). Average female model size-(2-4, and waist of 22” – 25”)
- Photos must be submitted before 12:00 p.m. ET on January 4, 2013 (up to 6 pictures per garment entry and each picture must be at least 450 pixels and not exceeding 5 MB per photo)
- All students entering the contest must have a faculty contact
*Please note we will accept an already constructed outfit from a class project or previous fashion show garment (that meets the criteria of the contest rules).
*Please note this design contest is separate from the Road To The Runway Style Search.
Prize details:
- (10) Grand Prize winners will not only see their garment walk down the runway (incredible national exposure for their design) but will also be flown to Miami, FL for an all-expense 3-day, 2-night trip with VIP Treatment at the Runway Show, a $500 AMEX® gift card….and much more!

- The minimum age to apply for the show is 21.
- For more details, information, and to apply, please fill out the application (Download) and follow all directions that are on it.
- The deadline for us to receive applications is March 15th, 2012.
- That said, our invite only casting calls begin in early April. Getting your submission in as soon as possible guarantees that you can be invited to the call that is geographically closest to you.

JUNIORS, do you want to have one of your original designs produced in ALLIGATOR skin for FREE? January 20, 2012
Posted by SCAD Fashion Department in : Design Resources, Scholarships and Contests , comments closed- Kick off date: Christy Plott Redd from American Tannery will present the project in class room space 249 in Atlanta on Wednesday, January 25, 2011 at 4:30 p.m. and in Savannah on Monday, January 30 at 4:30 p.m.
American Tanning and Leather Co. processes, tans and sells reptile hides, namely skins of alligator to Gucci, Chanel, Polo Ralph Lauren and Proenza Schouler to name a few. The company is located in Griffin, Georgia (approximately 45 minutes from Atlanta) and both campuses are invited to tour the tannery on February 24th.
- American Tanning and Leather Co. competition for both Atlanta and Savannah juniors in fashion design, FASM, or interior design
- DESIGN, CONCEPTUALIZE, and PRODUCE an alligator garment, accessory or home accessory.
- -1 student from each campus will “win” and have their item produced by American Tanning (free of charge to student, compliments of American Tanning
- Students could design a garment, clutch, day bag, belt, small furniture item, picture frame, pillow, desk accessories, etc.
- February 24, 2011- Open House for both campuses to visit Griffin tannery and meet with Christy (one on one) to discuss first design ideas and concepts
- Internal jury at SCAD to decide the 5 best designs by APRIL 27th to move forward to be judged by designer Gilles Mendel
- Winning design will be produced over the summer by American Tanning. Student winner will be announced in September and design will be unveiled in September after it has been produced in alligator skin.
NBAF Scholarship Update January 18, 2012

The award was established in honor of the late M. Jack Anderson, by his sister, Sandra Anderson Baccus. This award recognizes individuals who have distinguished themselves as cutting edge, creative and innovative fashion designers. Individuals selected to receive this award have excelled academically, mastered their particular fields of study, and are recognized as a dynamic emerging talent who possess leadership qualities in their personal life and professional aspirations.
Mr. Anderson possessed a brilliant mind, a caring heart and a competitive spirit. He was a great scholar, a graduate of MIT and Harvard; he loved sports and combined his brilliant mind with his charming personality to be successful in business and in his personal life. Mr. Anderson was devoted to his family, his friends and his community. He loved arts supporting the Austin Symphony and was an avid collector of African American art throughout his life. The award honors the life and legacy of Mr. Anderson and provides tangible recognition to emerging talent.
The honoree(s) will be announced at the Fine Art + Fashion event on March 15, 2012, at Neiman Marcus. Ms. Baccus, Chair Emeritus of Fine Art + Fashion, will present the M. Jack Anderson Emerging Talent Awards along with a $3000 honorarium to each of the three (3) honorees. A distinguished panel of judges from the Atlanta region will select the honorees.
The 6th Annual Fine Art + Fashion event is chaired by two of Atlanta’s most distinguished couples, Su and Al Longman and Merry and Chris Carlos. Honorary Chairs are long-time supporters of NBAF and patrons of the arts, Charlene Crusoe-Ingram and Earnest Ingram.
The award is open to all students who are:
- Currently enrolled in the accredited college or university fashion design program at Clark Atlanta University or the Savannah College of Art and Design.
- A student in good standing in an accredited college or university fashion design program.
- Possess leadership qualities in their personal life and professional aspirations.
For this project, each applicant must:
- Submit complete package online, word document, with design image attached in high resolution (300+ dpi). Include a brief biography of yourself and current photograph (high resolution). Email your application to Jason Bunin jbunin@scad.edu by January 20th.
- Select one (1) design to create: day, evening or wild card.
- Initial design application can be a fully rendered sketch with fabric samples and flats or the final garment. Initial design application is due January 23rd, by 5 pm.
- Respond to all of the following questions: 1200 words maximum.
- What is your design philosophy?
- For your design choice, what prompted your selection?
- Describe (in detail) your design elements, fabric, construction and
- style statement.
- What or who influenced your decision to enter design school?
- What are your career aspirations?
- If you were selected to receive this award, how would you use the honorarium?
- All designers will present in person to the panel of judges, February 19, 2012, beginning at 9:00 am, Neiman Marcus, Atlanta, Georgia.
- Each emerging designer will be given a time slot to present. Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your presentation time.
- Models are to arrive with hair and make-up complete. If your model needs to dress at the venue, you will want to make that adjustment in your arrival time.
- Participating applicants who arrive late will be disqualified.
- You will have five (5) minutes to make your presentation to the panel of judges. The judges will have 10 minutes to ask questions and view your design.
Timeline:
January 23rd, 2012 – Your submission must be sent to me for approval by 5PM. It must include your artist statement,self pics, garment design sketches, photographs.
February 1st, 2012- Your REVISED student artist statement is due in my mailbox in .doc format with your name in file i.e. j_brown_NBAF.doc along with any new images, self pics, etc.
*If you do not have anyone to photograph your garment on a model, we will arrange a date with photographer to photograph all design submissions.
NBAF Scholarship Upcoming Deadline: JAN 20th January 13, 2012

Please have your Apparel Development/ Senior Collection Professor review your work first before taking to Professor Bunin.
Your student artist statement is due in Prof Bunin’s emailbox (jbunin@scad.edu) by February 1st in .doc format with your name in file i.e. j_brown_NBAF.doc
If you do not have anyone to photograph your garment on a model, we will arrange a date with photographer to photograph all design submissions.
All work will be due in my office- photos, statement, garment(s) no later than February 15th.
