Chanel just posted close up video from their latest Haute Couture collection.   It’s a nice look at the embroidery and intricate hand work that goes in to each individual piece.  For more insight into Lesage, the atelier responsible for this handiwork, check out one of the books in the SCAD Library.

It’s couture week in Paris and the industry is buzzing about Jean Paul-Gaultier’s latest Haute Couture Collection.  Cathy Horyn of the New York Times called it his “most satisfying show in years” and praised his ability to take classics like the pantsuit and trenchcoat and actually do something new with them this time around.

Need feathers? Acrylic Domes and display boxes? Beads? Adhesives? Clock Parts? A Gold Leafing Kit? Fabric Paint or Dyes? Faux Fur? Letters, Numbers, & Striping Tape? Sequins? Faux Fur? String, Cord, Threads or Fibers? A Stuffed Blow Fish?

Really, who doesn’t need these things?

Kit Kraft is a favorite resource for Professor Jason Bunin for anything and everything for mood boards, presentations and craft projects.  He swears by this site for their speed, reliability and pricing.  I think they’re pretty nifty, too.

This one should be on your list of go-to sites for the future.  Add it to your bookmarks bar!

Many of you frequently reference the book Fashion Illustration for Designers by Kathryn Hagen in your fashion sketching classes.  Now she has added a few videos of her illustration and rendering techniques online.   While her style may not suit your own aesthetic, she is incredibly talented and shows some very helpful techniques for those of you looking for ways to improve your illustration skills.

She demonstrates step-by-step how to render chiffon and fur, leather, vinyl, ruffles, corduroy, transparent fabrics, plaids, graphic skin tones, satin among other things.  These videos are a great reference for those of you in all levels of fashion classes, from Intro to Fashion Design t0 Advanced Fashion Sketching.  Thank you, Professor Shinekia Thomas, for sharing this link with us!

I ♥ the SCAD Library January 13, 2011

Every day I’m here at SCAD I fall more in love with our library.  It is, seriously, one of my favorite places in the city and the greatest source of inspiration I could ever hope to have within steps of my office.

Today, one of our librarians directed me to an online resource that is absolutely fantastic:

http://library.scad.edu/screens/databases.html

It is a list of all the amazing online databases and periodicals that we have access to as students, faculty, and staff at SCAD.  I cannot wait to explore all of these great resources!

In the meantime, if you are in Atlanta and are able to get out of your house, stop by our library tomorrow (Friday, the 14th) for a workshop on  image hunting.  Our lovely librarians will be offering a workshop on how to find great fashion images online.  They will show you to the numerous digital resources we have access to (specifically focusing on StyleSight, ARTstor and WGSN) and help you find the right image for each of your projects.

If you are interested, drop by the SCAD library any time between 10 and noon tomorrow (Friday) to get their help!

I know that several of you are looking to improve your illustration styles over the winter break.   SCAD Atlanta Fashion Senior Edmond Bobb recently referred me to one of his go-to-blogs called “I ♥ Illustration.”   Compiled by Dutch Art Director, Anneke Krull, this blog exposes you to the work of nearly 200 illustrators.   Click here to access I ♥ Illustration

Here, also, is a roundup of posts here on the SCAD blog that will inspire you (I hope!) to develop your techniques and a variety of croquis to suit various consumers and brands: Lots and Lots of Illustrators.

Those of you based in Atlanta who would like some help with your illustrations or croquis over the winter break are welcome to contact me for some one on one time.  Just check your SCAD email for my address and send me a note to schedule an appointment.

Thanks for the great resource, Edmond!

Issey Miyake – Origami Collection October 27, 2010

Posted by SCAD Fashion Department in : Inspiration, Manufacturers, Trends , comments closed

For his latest collection, Issey Miyake worked with his R&D team to create apparel that expands from a flat, folded shape into a three dimensional garment when pulled from the top.  Using a software program devised by computer scientist Jun Mitani, 3-D shapes are developed from a single, flat sheet of paper which is then translated into a recycled PET polyester garment by Miyaki’s team.  The end result is not only beautiful, but mathmatically genius.

If you must use pictures of celebrities as muses or inspiration, make sure that they are this cool:

And, no, I’m not saying smoking is cool.

I am totally in love with Shorpy.  Don’t tell my boss, but I could totally waste many hours browsing through their photographs.  It is an excellent resource for inspirational high resolution images.  You can also purchase images from them.  My plan is to print out a bunch of family photos and make up stories about how I am related to the people in the pictures.  Like these ladies below.

I also love this lady because nothing says high fashion like a bathing suit and knee highs.

The site also has some beautiful architectural photos like the ones below.

Or not so beautiful but equally inspiring like this one of Pittsburgh:
