The History of the Puffy Coat January 27, 2010
Posted by SCAD Fashion Department in : Illustration, Inspiration, Trends , comments closedIn this fascinating video, Bill Cunningham discusses the evolution of the down-filled coat. While designer Charles James imagined his coat worn over a dress at the Opera in the 1930′s, it got a new lease on life when illustrator Antonio saw it at Studio 54 – over a bare chest.

Fabulous Fashion Jobs #3: The Illustrator December 4, 2009
Posted by SCAD Fashion Department in : Careers, Illustration, Industry News, Professional Portfolios, Trends , comments closedBlue Logan finds a way into everything. The best fashion shows, the best parties, and now the best art shows. The British-born fashion illustrator has traveled to fashion events around the world sketching the scene at rapid speed. This week, he’s been invited to Miami’s Art Basel Fair where he will be camped out in the lobby of the super-posh Standard Hotel in Miami Beach capturing the faces, attitude and mood of the crowd gathered there.
Click here to read the New York Times’ article about his trip to Miami and, what one curator calls, the recent “blossoming” of fashion illustration. To learn more about Blue Logan, you can visit his website or read another blogger’s interview with him here.

Get their attention with a creative card December 3, 2009
Posted by SCAD Fashion Department in : Careers, Illustration, Museums and Exhibitions , comments closedSarah Collins found the best holiday cards in the Shop SCAD store today. It got me thinking about what a great way that is to showcase your talent in a non-invasive cheery way.
There’s a new exhibition this month at the Smithsonian featuring 100 holiday cards from some very notable American artists. Here are photographs of some of the cards featured in the exhibition.
The Smithsonian Magazine, in their write-up of the exhibition, stated that
[t]he cards in this exhibition weren’t about making money. They were for friends, family and maybe a gallery owner or two. Not meant for public viewing, they give us an intimate, unguarded view of artists doing what we count on artists to do: break through the canned sentiments and commercial clutter of their time to make a personal statement.
Isn’t that what we all long to do?
Why not make a card and send it to your favorite fashion designer or retailer? In this world of a million emails and generic factory-made greeting cards, your offering is sure to be appreciated.

Fifi Lapin October 19, 2009
Posted by SCAD Fashion Department in : Illustration, Industry News , comments closedOh la la! Fifi Lapin is the chicest rabbit in the fashion world. She blogs about her trips to all the hot shows and does darling illustrations of herself wearing the latest runway fashions. Fun and cute . . . the Fifi Lapin blog is a great, if mindless, way to follow the latest in fashion news.
I especially like this spread that she illustrated for the Hong Kong publication Little Thing Magazine…. The layout is an interesting and playful way to share illustrations and text.
Many thanks to Sarah Collins for letting us know about this lovely bunny.
