SCAD: The Place Where Fashion Dreams Come True! November 20, 2009

Posted by SCAD Fashion Department in : Design Resources , add a comment

Atlanta Professor Zeagler recently received the following letter in the mail from a young aspiring fashion designer.  Now that the quarter is finished and you finally have time to SLEEP (hooray!), take a moment to reflect on why you’re here and remember how many little girls and boys dream of being right where you are!

“Dear Professor Zeagler:

Hello, I am in sixth grade at Durham Middle School.  As you probably know, school is hard when it comes to fashion! You have to stay caught up on all the latest trends.  But, I don’t like being like everyone else.  I like making my own trends and doing my own things.  I am very interested in fashion and designing.  Something I think leads to a great fashion designer! I have my own ideas about fashion and I have a great dream!

I hope to go to SCAD one day when I make it to college.  I really would like to graduate from the school as a graphic designer.  But, I don’t want that to be the only thing that I do.  I also want to be a fashion designer.   That would be my side job, but still very important.  More like my second job - not part time a normal, fun, full time job.

My dream is to make a line of my very own jeans - Passion Jeans.  I would love to make pink super skinny jeans with black threading.  All my jeans would be colorful (sort of like the blue, blue jeans that I’m wearing now!) and cool!  I think maybe you can relate to the dreams of fashion designing.  I can’t wait to make my jeans and for my dreams to come true.

Sincerely,

An Excited Sixth Grader”

What do you do?  Create a new business model!

This stinky economy is driving entrepreneurs to create all sorts of inventive new business models and helping others thrive while the rest of the industry is in the red.  One idea that has really taken off lately is the concept of renting apparel and accessories.  Several different companies are purchasing designer garments and renting them to consumers at 90% off the retail price.

The Wall Street Journal reported last week that businesses operating under such models have found new customers during the recession and are actually remaining cash flow positive.  Click here to see the rest of the article that was submitted to us by Atlanta student Josh Holcombe.

I know it’s difficult to stay positive and feel “up” in a down economy - but keep in mind that necessity is the mother of invention.  Not that anyone actually needs a $2,000 Tuleh dress.  But when you have the option to wear one for $200, maybe you could invent a reason.

The Sale of the Century November 18, 2009

Watching the Valentino documentary - one can’t help but marvel at how much wealth and stuff Valentino and Giancarlo Giammetti have amassed in a few decades. A similar story could be told of Yves Saint Laurent and his longtime partner Pierre Bergé.

Following Yves Saint Laurent’s death in Paris last year, Bergé began selling articles from their collection for multiple millions of Euro a piece - including a record-breaking €32 million Matisse. This week in Paris, Christie’s auction house will begin selling a more affordable collection of 1200 objects from the Saint Laurent - Bergé collection, most of which come from their French country chateau and the proceeds from which will benefit AIDS research.

Just in time for holiday gift ideas, you can tell your sweetie that you want to own a little piece of fashion history.  You could get a Matisse sketch for a couple thousand bucks, three crocodile Hermes suitcases for about six thousand, two Yves Saint Laurent Brooches for less than a thousand, or an Ethiopian necklace of glass beads and metal for about $150. Click here to see the full 275 page catalog or here to browse through an interactive photo wall.

The auction ends Friday, so drop those hints fast.  And, just think, you can say “Oh, this old thing?  Well, it used to belong to Yves Saint Laurent.  He always kept it at his French chateau . . . blah, blah, blah.”

Nano Technology in your Pants November 18, 2009

Those of you studying Intro to Textiles will appreciate this new fabric used by Outlier, a clothing manufacturer for city cyclists.  The textiles they use in their pants is given what the Swiss textile manufacturer Schoeller calls the Lotus treatment, “a nano tech fabric treatment modeled after the surface of a lotus leaf . . . . What that means is that the surface is a fractal with no repeating surface structure upon which oil or stains can bond.”

So you can pour all sorts of crazy liquids on it - like red wine, mud, and coffee - and the stuff just rolls off.  And, to accommodate Outlier’s bike riding customer, the fabric wicks moisture from the inside, remains dry and breathable, and (with its incorporated stretch) allows for a wide range of motion.

Basically, this company is producing garments that look like something you could buy anywhere, like the basic khaki - but the fact that they are using these super-functional textiles gives them an edge over the competition and gets people talking.

So, be glad you have the opportunity to study textiles.  You may just pick up on something that will spark an idea for a super-functional and easily-marketable apparel line.

Street to Runway Trend - Return to Victorian November 13, 2009

A big trend that has been gaining speed over the past year is a new Victorian look in both menswear and womenswear.  The New York Times covered the trend yesterday and its influence on contemporary menswear.

This trend has led to a series of “Tweed Rides” across the globe.  Beginning in London earlier this year, a group of dandies and ladies dress in their coolest tweeds and take leisurely rides across their city.  The trend quickly spread to New York, Boston, Sydney, and San Francisco.

Stylesight, always quick to pick up on these trends, recently posted photos from Antique Elegance (formerly Victorian Elegance,) a biannual Victorian antiques and clothing show in Dallas.  To see the entire trend report, go to the Stylesight website and then copy this link into your address bar:   http://www.stylesight.com/fashionoffice/board-dynamic.php?boardnum=8799&mypage=1
