3. Drawing the 9-head fashion figure:
Croquis: comes from French and means simply “sketch.” In fashion, the term refers to a quick sketch of a figure (typically 9 heads tall as this is the accepted proportions for fashion illustration) with a loose drawing of the clothes that are being designed. Often a large number of croquis drawings will be created for one finished look, which is fully drawn and finished (the final fashion illustration)
3-minute poses are used for warming up. Utilize this pose to focus just on the figure itself. Analyze the model’s pose and use quick, broad strokes to indicate her stance. Use positive and negative shapes to quickly indicate shadows and highlights.
Longer poses will allow you to analyze the drape of the clothing. Start with the overall shape, the fit on the model then move to details such as closures, stitching, and patterning.
The average body is 8 heads tall, the fashion figure is elongated to 9 heads and typically thinner than the average body. See the back of the handout for a diagram of a front view 9 head figure. Learning the basic structure of the figure and after practice you will be able to illustrate the fashion figure freely without a template.

Concept: We’re going to be creating life-size garments on stiff paper to be modeled on a real person (as if we’re playing paper dolls). The idea is to combine 2D/paper and 3D/real.
