Nicole Schadewitz in her essay “Design Patterns For Cross-Cultural Collaboration” (2009) asserts that technology assisted cross-cultural collaborative design requires an understanding of interaction design patterns to support intercultural teamwork in design learning environments. Schadewitz supports this assertion by showing design pattern research and the emergent 11 related design patterns that encourage social interaction and team management among participants by providing “an overview of related solutions for supporting design collaboration across national and geographical borders.” (44).1 Read the rest of this entry »

The world is changing so rapidly as technology makes international business as simple to achieve as staying local. Given the rise in globalization, one might ask how we are preparing our future leaders (those still within the educational system) with the skills they need to become successful in the 21st century. Coming from a business degree background, I have studied the concepts and theories extensively behind the newly transformed flat organizational structure. In simplest terms, a flat organization has removed the levels of management and hierarchy.[1] Primarily this organizational model is used for smaller organizations (and is an excellent resource for small creative companies). Working through some thoughts…

Question: What if, through technology-assisted collaboration, graphic designers could “flatten” the globe and receive feedback from other countries/locales? I would like to look at “flattening the globe” by allowing other artists (multicultural and multidisciplinary) to provide feedback on the design processes, thus enabling and empowering the designer to provide a well-rounded design. When we look at cultural nuances in visual communications, we are going off what we have learned in a book or magazine. Many designers have limited international travel experience.
