Imogen Cunningham December 31, 2008

Imogen Cunningham was a pioneer in photography. Her career in photography started in 1901 and proceeded until the year of her death in 1976. She was one of the first women photographers to capture the nude human form in its unadorned beauty. Her knowledge of the medium evolved from her studies in photographic chemistry. She subsidized her early education with botanical photography.

I have added 38 images to our digital image database in the Visual Resources Center. These images would be excellent for those studying the human figure for photographic or anatomical knowledge. For those wishing to understand the complex challenge that hands can present, her images of artists’ and musicians’ hands are amazing studies in the human form.

This artist is controversial on the level of Mapplethorpe as his work has threatened the National Endowment for the Arts. His work has also been vandalized by Neo-Nazis. His images of death, bodily fluids, KKK members are the epitome of shock art.

I have included two of the less controversial images in this post. To see the rest of his work please see the Digital Image Database.

I have uploaded images from Thomas Allen’s book, Uncovered. His work utilizes vintage pulp novels to create amazing scenes with clever use of lighting and depth of focus.

I am happy to inform everyone that I have embarked upon a project to provide more imagery from our permanent reserve collection in Jen Library. These contain many nude images and some erotic photography. It is my hope that those who might be shy about asking for some of these titles at the circulation desk will be more comfortable accessing some of the images in our Digital Image Database http://did.scad.edu/ . I have tried to chose images covering as broad a range as possible across race, gender, and content.

Here are URLs for some of the titles I have included in this project.

So I hope the SCAD community finds this useful. Please feel free to give me feedback.

So I have been in the VRC for a few weeks now. I am beginning to master image cataloging. I thought I would share a few of the images I cataloged today, as I have enjoyed the sort of mythical vibe that coincides nicely with the day. These are oil paintings by Arnold Bocklin

Currently I am in the Jen Library man cave. (4 guys work in here) I am learning a lot and sharpening my Photoshop skills.  I scan and catalog approximately 20 images a day. We maintain a Digital Image Database http://did.scad.edu/  of roughly 70,000 images. We add about 1200-1500 images a month. If the database lacks something you need for a project or presentation give us a couple weeks warning and bring us the book (room 318 in Jen Library) you need the images from and we will add them to our database. I am enjoying my new position and am excited to continue contributing to the SCAD community in my small way.
