Posted by ereber in : Jen, library, magazines, periodicals, serials , add a commentSerials represent the “cutting edge” of information as they are published with far greater frequency than books. Scholarly journals will also be more acceptable, being peer reviewed, than many other sources for your professors. Many professors will tell you online sources such as Wikipedia are a no go because you cannot be sure of the authenticity of the information provided. A prime example of inauthentic entires would be politicians going in and altering information about themselves.
The Serials Department has 1727 titles, 924 of which are current subscriptions.
We also have 6,398 micro forms (microfilm and microfiche) and 26,918 bound volumes.
Serials (magazines, journals, etc) are in multiple locations in the library:
Current periodicals are in the NW corner of the 2nd floor.
Bound periodicals are in the room along the south wall of the 2nd floor of the library.
Reserve periodicals can be found at the circulation desk on the first floor by the entrance.
Any periodicals marked as “Level B” are in the basement and can be retrieved by staff members at either the circulation desk or the serials office on the 2nd floor.

Posted by ereber in : Jen, library, magazines, periodicals, serials , add a commentJust a quick notice for our sports enthusiasts. Due to repeated theft we have moved Sports Illustrated to reserve. You can check out the latest issues at the circulation desk in Jen Library for 2 hours of on site reading. We know this might create an little extra hassle for the students, staff, and faculty who want to stay on top of their sports news. However, the serials office has had well over 50% of the last 2 volumes stolen so we thought it better to have the extra barrier than to not have them at all. We apologize for any inconvenience.

It does give us ample time time to recover from the last few weeks of frenzied studying and book returns. For those of you who are graduating I applaud you on your accomplishments. For the rest of you, I hope to see you next Fall or this Summer. Remember we are on the second floor and are always happy to help you with your library needs. Enjoy your summer folks, get some sun for us!

As you can see, someone has taken the liberty to cut out an image from this bound periodical. When this happens not only is the school the victim of theft, so are the rest of the students who might need the information stolen. I cannot stress enough how hard it will be to replace this. At best we might get a black and white copy to glue into the volume but the color image is most likely lost forever. Periodicals go out of print almost as soon as they are produced. Its unfortunate that someone’s act of selfishness that probably only helped them with a single project will affect everyone who might have needed it from here on….
Remember all students, staff, and faculty are free to utilize the scanners at no cost if you need nice duplicates of the information you find in the library! We also have copiers if you are in a big rush.

Posted by ereber in : Jen, library, magazines, periodicals, serials , add a commentI personally receive upwards of 600 individual issues a month for Jen Library’s periodical collection. Everything from Vogue to Architecture and Urbanism passes by me first. I process these materials and then enter them into Millennium, our online catalogue, so that you can be aware of what we have available by checking the library catalogue through your Myscad pages. I also facilitate the binding of older periodicals into book form to help preserve the information that our serials collection provides. These bound volumes as well as loose current issues can all be found on the second floor of Jen Library. If ever you are looking for an item in the online catalogue and it is on reserve, you can find that item at the Circulation Desk on the first floor by the front doors. If you need help navigating the serials collection come see either myself or Steve Majure, the Serials Librarian, in our office on the second floor of Jen Library by the bound periodicals.

I am the Serials Assistant at the Jen Library. I assist the Serials Librarian, Steve Majure, in managing over 900 magazines, journals, and periodicals for the Savannah campus. Its quite a job, but we love what we do. If you ever need assistance with any of the serials resources we welcome you to come see us on the second floor of Jen Library.
