				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In this project our goal was to make something new out of a map. Initially we were to destroy a map by doing whatever means we chose, but my map seemed rather resistant to any changes short of burning (and I had no matches, nor a lighter). The ink refused to run when I poured water over it and it would hardly stain in tea or coffee. So I ended up tearing my map into pieces, arranged it in the shape of the county I grew up in (Boyd County, Kentucky), and laid tape over it in the shape of the distribution of coal and shale in my county, something that shapes the economy of the place I come from. I also wrote a letter to my hometown and incorporated it into the map (which is of the state of Georgia, the only other place I have lived in my life).</p>
<p>I neglected to take process photos, but I do have a final photograph of my work.</p>

<p style="text-align: left">Our project was to re-interpret the story of Jack and Jill using design elements and clip art. One of the problems that we had was that our museum didn&#8217;t come across as a museum, and that the panel with Jack being shot was a little unclear, as other people said it seemed as if Jack was shooting other people, because which one was Jack was ambiguous. Below is our final product.</p>

<p>After making a decision on layout we were to come up with three plans for inking. We could use the shapes in any way we chose and fill the empty spaces or leave them white. Here are my three inking plans:</p>

<p>My last design above was originally more blocky and I didn&#8217;t like this. To resolve it I went into the empty grid squares and drew from my motif shapes to make it flow more. Some of the shapes are very free-form and organic.</p>

<p>I had issues cutting the board out, so the edges were sloppy and I&#8217;m disappointed in that. However overall I guess I appreciate my process and end result. For some reason when I do any assignment in this class I feel like I do it the wrong way.</p>
<p>When it came to critique, nobody noticed the edges so I was a little put off by that but as far as comments go I didn&#8217;t find any constructive comments that were said, except something that wasn&#8217;t explicitly stated was that my piece does not have a strong focal point. Nobody could decide if that was an issue or not.</p>

<p>I selected my fourth design (one curved, one diagonal, and one straight line) for my redesign. <p>I chose each of my final designs for different reasons. The first one I selected because of the asymmetrical balance which gives emphasis to the box in the corner and it allows your eye to follow around the piece. The second one I selected because it is almost neatly divided into quarters and I think that is a pleasing arrangement. The third one I selected because the eye easily follows through the piece and the parallel lines create an illusion of thickness. The fourth I chose because the round lines allow the eye to move through the piece and the straight  lines bring the eye back down.</p>

<p>My name is Emma and I really enjoy feminism and punk rock. I&#8217;m hoping to study illustration at SCAD and will possibly minor in either storyboarding or concept art. I don&#8217;t have a favorite book but I quite enjoy Extremely Loud &amp; Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer. Neither do I have a favorite movie but I have several I love. Ask me what they are! In my spare time I draw (quite) and play bass.
