I neglected to take process photos, but I do have a final photograph of my work.

This project was about taking photos of objects around us that resembled the entire alphabet and the numerals 1-9. I neglected to get 5 of the letters/numbers (F, Q, 3, 5, 7).

Our project was to re-interpret the story of Jack and Jill using design elements and clip art. Our interpretation was that Jack and Jill were robbers and went to steal a crown from a museum. Jack gets shot, hence “Jack fell down and broke his crown”. Jill ends up in jail. One of the problems that we had was that our museum didn’t come across as a museum, and that the panel with Jack being shot was a little unclear, as other people said it seemed as if Jack was shooting other people, because which one was Jack was ambiguous. Below is our final product.

Our task was then to arrange this motif on the grid and make five different designs. These are my designs:

After making a decision on layout we were to come up with three plans for inking. We could use the shapes in any way we chose and fill the empty spaces or leave them white. Here are my three inking plans:

My last design above was originally more blocky and I didn’t like this. To resolve it I went into the empty grid squares and drew from my motif shapes to make it flow more. Some of the shapes are very free-form and organic.

I had issues cutting the board out, so the edges were sloppy and I’m disappointed in that. However overall I guess I appreciate my process and end result. For some reason when I do any assignment in this class I feel like I do it the wrong way.

When it came to critique, nobody noticed the edges so I was a little put off by that but as far as comments go I didn’t find any constructive comments that were said, except something that wasn’t explicitly stated was that my piece does not have a strong focal point. Nobody could decide if that was an issue or not.

My concentration design came to me after much mulling over the concept of what ‘concentration’ actually means. I was set to re-do the cherries one because I got fixated on the example our professor provided but alas there was naught but 10 minutes left in the class so I called it a day.

I selected my fourth design (one curved, one diagonal, and one straight line) for my redesign. I decided to try something more simple and like what I saw other students do, which was a bold, stripped-down design with more negative space. I did this with a digital drawing program, I hope that is fine by the professor’s standards.

I chose each of my final designs for different reasons. The first one I selected because of the asymmetrical balance which gives emphasis to the box in the corner and it allows your eye to follow around the piece. The second one I selected because it is almost neatly divided into quarters and I think that is a pleasing arrangement. The third one I selected because the eye easily follows through the piece and the parallel lines create an illusion of thickness. The fourth I chose because the round lines allow the eye to move through the piece and the straight  lines bring the eye back down.

These were the guidelines for our assignment:

A. Using only straight horizontal and vertical lines, divide the page into a design that emphasizes line but develops interest in how the space is subdivided

B. Do the same thing using only diagonal lines

C. Do the same thing using only curved lines

D. Do the same thing using at least one vertical or horizontal, one diagonal, and one curved line

My name is Emma and I really enjoy feminism and punk rock. I’m hoping to study illustration at SCAD and will possibly minor in either storyboarding or concept art. I have two cats named Kiwi & Morgan, respectively. I love eating junk and food that is bad for me. I don’t have a favorite book but I quite enjoy Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer. Neither do I have a favorite movie but I have several I love. Ask me what they are! In my spare time I draw (quite) and play bass. I’m also a fan of video games and The-Webcomic-That-Must-Not-Be-Named (not actual title – if you know what it is, you know, if you don’t… let me tell you about it).
