As we move into finals week and move out of on- and off-campus housing, SCAD is once again buzzing with activity. With this activity comes the increased possibility of crime. Here are some helpful tips that can reduce your risk of becoming a crime victim:
Property:
- Always lock your car doors.
- Do not leave valuables in view inside the car.
- Use an anti-theft device such as a steering wheel lock.
- Do not store an extra key under the car/fender/etc.
- If possible, park your car where it can be seen from the street.
- At night, park in well-traveled and well-lit areas.
During a move, do not allow strangers to help you move your belongings. Many times these people will walk away with your high-value items.
Personal safety:
- Travel well-lit, busy routes. Avoid walking or parking in shadowed areas. Hold your keys in your hand as you approach your door.
- There’s safety in numbers. Don’t make yourself an easy target. If you are out at night, arrange to go to class, run errands or go shopping with a friend.
- Avoid displaying and carrying large sums of money in public. Carry only the credit cards you need.
- Be careful with purses, wallets and smartphones. Carry a purse close to your body, but do not loop or wrap straps around you. A purse snatcher could injure you. Keep wallets in an inside pocket. Keep smartphones out of sight. Avoid texting and talking on the phone when walking. Smartphones, most often iPhones, are being targeted because of their high resale value.
- Be alert and aware. Pay full attention to who is around you when you are in public.
- If you are confronted, cooperate! Give the criminal what he/she asks for — wallet, keys, jewelry, credit cards and electronics. Your life is more valuable than replaceable possessions. Concentrate on remembering a description and call police immediately.
If a robbery should occur:
- Your safety is most important. Above all, don’t be a hero.
Do what the robber says and don’t stall.
- Don’t make any sudden, unexpected moves. A nervous criminal may think you are reaching for a concealed weapon.
- If the suspect claims he has a weapon in his pocket, never try to call his bluff.
- Afterward, call the police immediately.
- Keep all witnesses at the scene until the police arrive.
- If a witness must leave, write down his or her name, address and telephone number.
- Write down a complete description of the suspect, weapon and vehicle used, if any.
SCAD security officers offer escorts to SCAD parking lots upon request, and the university offers the SCAD BeeLine bus service to assist with safe transport to and from SCAD facilities. Saferide is available from sundown until 6 a.m. to provide a safe ride home within downtown and midtown Savannah by calling SCAD security at 912.525.4500.

Summer class registration is underway! SCAD summer classes are a great way for students to accelerate the completion of students’ double major, major, or minor. Students can explore the wonders of Lacoste, pursue a for-credit internship, take one of the numerous eLearning classes, and/or visit our spectacular Hong Kong campus. We especially want to draw your attention to how one’s minor can foster completion by taking summer classes.
Here are some helpful bullet points about the benefits of Summer Courses or further study:
- Taking summer courses will expedite completion of one’s double major, major or minor, all of which will advance career options.
- Look for 5-week courses that will complement your summer plans.
- eLearning courses abound, and can be taken while traveling to continue progress toward degree completion.
- Experience SCAD locations in Savannah, Atlanta, Hong Kong, and Lacoste to enhance your global experience.
- Do an internship and supplement it with an eLearning course. Look for internship opportunities in one of SCAD’s global locations. Take courses onsite, while doing your internship.
There are limitless possibilities. Meet up with a student success adviser to plan your summer!
Any and all of these opportunities will help ensure that you can be well prepared – both to graduate in a timely manner, and to obtain a job upon graduation. Registration for summer classes already has started.
