Our assignment was to sit in one location and document all of the sounds that we heard and then find some way to map them out. I was inspired by the look of a traditional sound wave and then assigned images to the peaks in the wave to identify the individual sounds.sound map

I had to use only flat black squares to create images representing order, increase, bold, congested, playful, and tension.

For this project I had to come up with a motif by combining two simple shapes. I combined two squares to make a star. Then I had to create a grid with a hundred images of my motif glued down. Once I had them glued down I used tracing paper to trace different design combinations using my motif. Once I had settled on one design I had to ink it on illustration board using india ink. Here is my original grid:

I got compliments on my craftsmanship and placement of the sparse stars in the bottom right corner. The class agreed that it would have been better if I had left a white border around it.
