Crested Myna

Crested Myna

The Crested Myna is a common bird native to Hong Kong with the special talent of mimicking sounds, noises, voices, and other birds. It is a small black bird related to birds in the Starling family, and it looks like a small crow or blackbird with a buff of black feathers above its beak.  Crested Mynas may be easier to find out on a hike in the mountains or out in less populated areas in Hong Kong, as they prefer open country to urban areas. They can be most easily seen if one takes a visit to the Yuen Po Bird Garden in Kowloon. There they are kept and sold as pets, and are popular for their ability to mimic their owners. Unfortunately, not much information is available on the Crested Myna. Despite that, I was able to find several photographs as well as a Youtube Video of a Crested Myna in a park showing off its mimicking skills!
