Over the past weekend, I visited the Yuen Po bird garden in Hong Kong! It’s about a 30 minute stroll from SCAD Hong Kong, so I definitely recommend it if you have a few hours to spare. The bird garden is a place not only where you can purchase pet birds of any type or size, it is also a place where bird owners take their pets to relax and enjoy the outdoors. In the gardens, cages upon cages line both tight, cramped spaces and open areas. Any type of bird, from loud Mynas to African Gray Parrots to small canaries can be purchased. Animal lovers be warned: many of the birds are kept in cramped conditions and are visibly very stressed. Though the bird gardens are a fascinating place to visit and see exotic types(I even saw a toucan!), if you’re sensitive you might leave a little more depressed than you were when you arrived. Whether you feel sad or not, I recommend a walk through neighboring Flower Market Road(aptly named) on the journey home.
