The sound map was a challenge for me because I’ve never really tried to turn sounds into images. It’s a weird way of thinking. So, for the hour I spent listening to sounds, I was sitting in the outdoor area by the SCAD Museum. The black circle symbol is supposed to represent me and the direction I was facing. My back was to the road and on the other side of the street a building was under construction so the spiky grey and orange shapes represent those harsh grating noises. The grey scribbles that go in and out of view are the sound of a helicopter that kept circling the museum and surrounding area. The yellow squiggles are for a man laughing nearby, and I picture laughter as yellow which is light and warm. The pink lines represent the sound of a girl talking as she passed by. The neon green dashes that symbolize the beeping of a truck backing up. And finally my favorite symbols are the blue circular shapes gliding by which are the lovely sounds of seagulls. It’s a very peaceful sound and blue is a calming color, which explains why they look the way they do. There is also the hazy greyish-green all around the edges which is meant to be the constant buzz and hum of a busy city (car engines, tires moving on the asphalt, conversations, footsteps, wind, etc.).

During the critique it seemed to be understood that Jill wasn’t physically there, Jack was on the search for some water source, and that Jack dies in the end. The class wasn’t able to immediately grasp the schizophrenic idea, but understood that Jill was more of a thought. They were also thrown by the presence of the elephant and it’s part in the story.

Ideas were tossed around about the extent of Jack’s mental issues. Perhaps the whole adventure is taking place in his mind and at the end we could have shown Jack as playing with a toy  elephant. Or maybe he sees an actual elephant but in his insanity he thinks it’s an easy opponent. Overall I think our group did a good job and at least part of the story was understood at first glance.

All these blogs I have provided links to, are very simple and the designs do not distract from the artists’ work. I mainly chose them because these are a few of my inspirations ( Ben Balistreri, Bobby Chiu and Kei Acedera of imaginism studios, and David Coleman). They have all dabbled in character design and I think that would be an awesome job to have. I guess I would say that Balistreri’s is the most aesthetically appealing blog because there is a bit more color but honestly I don’t care either way what a background looks like on an artist’s  website as long as it isn’t overwhelming their work, which is the only thing I’m really focusing on. And it’s interesting when they post events and shows they’ve been to. I will have to remember that in the future.

I wouldn’t get very far with my inking plans before I decided I didn’t want to go with an idea, which is why none of them are completely done. It was more of a time saver for me.

This one kinda threw me off. I didn’t know how literally to take the term “increase”. In a way I feel like I might have incorporated it twice. From left to right the squares increase in size but it also looks like they are all launching…..increasing in height. Boom!

BOLD Exploration:

A poopin’ square! ha. But seriously folks, this one was hard. I was tempted to just smack a huge square slightly off-center on the white background. That would be bold right? But too simple I suppose. I wanted it to still be appealing.

CONGESTED Exploration: I think this is a pretty simple solution to the problem. I probably could have explored the possibilities more. But it’s definitely congested.

TENSION Exploration: The way I understand the term “tension” is basically like juxtaposition. Smooth and rough, small and big, warm and cool; things that oppose each other but work together in a composition. So here I have ordered/structured forms working against loose/free forms.

ORDER Exploration: I had to look up examples of order in art and I came across a photograph of a brick wall with all different sizes of bricks, so that inspired me to create this. I wasn’t meant to look exactly like bricks, especially since I wasn’t able to use rectangles. I also wanted to make sure I had a clear focal point so a made one little area consisted of very tiny squares that are relatively the same size. I feel like there is order amongst randomization.
